A bit closer

Narrator pov. Continuing a bit later~

Irene and Haibara were hiding in the bushes after having left the code made with mushrooms, though Irene added an extra thing as she knew the culprit wasn't trying to kill them and wanted Edogawa to know immediately. 

Irene was holding the cub back from running out, having told Haibara that she'd handle it since the scientist was injured.

Ayumi found the code as expected and called the others over.

Genta said, "What is this? There are 3 mushrooms on a branch!"

Ayumi added, "The other five are scattered on the ground."

Mitsuhiko added, "There's a small cracked pebble and a rotten dead branch broken in half too."

The dead branch looked like it was stepped on, which was intentional.

Agasa then identified the types of mushrooms on both the branch and around it before the youngest hunter asked if they meant something.

Agasa answered that he didn't know.

Haibara glanced at Irene and whispered, "What's the pebble and rotten branch for?" 

Irene mumbled, "They show the whole truth." though she kept her ears up for when Jubei the bear arrived, still holding on to the squirming cub.

Edogawa took a closer look at the branch with the mushrooms, then the pebble and the dead branch, his eyes narrowing as he figured it out.

Irene knew he figured out her addition to the code as well as he didn't bother turning on his watch, and instead immediately called out to the culprit, Saika, to stop hiding.

Haibara was surprised, and Irene sighed silently as she listened in.

And then Saika took out his gun and Ayumi noticed Jubei behind them and screamed at the bear not to come out before Jubei revealed herself and stood menacingly while growling as Saika put his gun down and tried to calm her.

At that moment, Irene let the cub go before Jubei got near Genta which got the mother bear to calm down when she saw her child and they both happily licked at each other before walking off.

As Edogawa continued the rest of his deduction, he finally revealed Saika's motive for firing his gun at the two girls in the first place.

The youngest hunter questioned that as it was their job to hunt for bears and the skinny hunter recalled how Saika said he was the one who made Jubei lose her eye.

Saika calmly looked down and started to tell the whole truth about how he met Jubei, Irene took the chance as she helped Haibara to stand up while wrapping her arm around her shoulder again as they both walked over to the group.

When Edogawa hinted at the dead hunter having used the other child of Jubei as dead bait, Saika confirmed it and said that the corpse was hung which made Irene look back to where Jubei and her cub left as the two other hunters felt bad.

When Saika said his opinion about how that hunter who killed a baby cub just to make its mother come out was the only beast that was around, Irene mentally agreed.

One hour later, they met with the police and Saika turned himself in as the detective boys and Agasa got in his car and left, after Haibara's injury was checked more thoroughly of course.

Edogawa explained how he knew about what happened to the dead cub, not mentioning that Irene hinted at it with the pebble and dead branch since that would have been suspicious to the kids, he only mentioned the grave.

When Haibara commented that what Edogawa said meant that Saika worried more about the bear than them humans, Irene said, "You can't exactly blame him. Jubei was the reason he survived 20 years ago, so if he didn't care about her back, he would be exactly like that hunter who killed her cub."

Haibara seemed to go quiet at that and Ayumi said, "And isn't it great? The Mother Bear was saved." before she and the other two real kids looked out the window

Meanwhile, Irene rubbed her eyes and leaned her head back as she fell asleep, her insomnia affecting her again as Haibara stared at the kids and then behind her at where Irene was, staring at her with a bit of compassion.

Edogawa saw that and blinked which made her look at him and say, "What?" he just shook his head and said, "Nothing." before she looked away and he smiled a bit to himself as he glanced at Irene then sat back in his seat.

Though Irene didn't know it yet, what happened today may have got her a bit closer to getting Haibara to trust her and bond with her.

Well, look at that. Ai stared at Irene with something other than hatred and coldness, that's some progress.

Too bad Irene had fallen asleep before she could see it though, but at least Conan noticed.
