Dean jogged down the hall, calling back, "I'll be at Y/N's!"
"Be good!" John called from the office, making Dean smile as he ran out the front door. He made his usual route to Y/N's house, knocking on the front door. Bouncing on the balls of his feet, he waited only a few seconds before Auntie opened the door, a smile on her face. "Dean, I told you to stop knocking," she said, stepping aside to let him in.
Dean had easily fallen back into his routine of calling Y/N's parents "Aunt" and "Uncle," just like Y/N had fallen back into her routine of calling John "Uncle". Even though summer break had started three weeks before, Dean had just gotten back from a camping trip with his Dad and Sammy two days ago. Yesterday he had unpacked and cleaned everything in his responsibility, so today was his first real day back to spend time with Y/N.
"It feels weird not to knock," Dean replied, stepping inside. "Where's Y/N?"
"Out back," she replied. "She's been quieter than normal, I think something happened."
Dean furrowed his eyebrows, and made his way back to the backyard, sliding open the glass back door. He paused as he saw his best friend on the old play set, dangling upside down from the monkey bars, her hair hanging, long enough to brush on one of the swings.
Y/N was just staring at the fence, a thoughtful gleam in her eyes. "Y/N?" he asked.
She instantly turned to him, smiling widely. "Dean!"
He walked towards her, laughing slightly as she tried to move out of her twisted position. "Ow," she whined as her feet fell to the ground, rubbing her knee as she sat on the swing to the right.
"You alright?" Dean asked, sitting on the swing beside her.
"I'll be okay; my mom has some bruise cream inside," she replied, smiling.
Nodding slowly, Dean commented, "Actually, I meant about while I was gone. Auntie said you've been quieter than normal."
Y/N sighed, looking at the bright grass. Dean kept his gaze at her as she kicked, swinging gently and slowly. "Some of our old classmates just...."
"Just what?" Dean pushed, resting his elbows on his knees.
"Just teased me this past week," she admitted, before looking at Dean. "But I'm okay, really! It's just hard not to tell them about Hogwarts and how amazing it is."
"They're stupid," Dean told her, smiling. "And they're missing out, big time."
She laughed, nodding. "You're right. They are."
Dean stood from his swing, holding out his hand. "Now, wasn't there a game you wanted to show me?"
"Oh!" Y/N cried, jumping up, taking his hand and pulling him back into the house. "It's so much fun, Josh and I have been playing it all week!"You bit your lip, reading over the letter from Hermione. "What is it?"
You looked up to see Dean tossing a baseball between his hands, leaning against your doorframe. Giving him a small smile you looked back down to the parchment. "She's just worried," you told him. "Harry hasn't been answering any of her or Ron's letters."
"Haven't you sent a few, too?" Dean asked, moving to sit beside you.
You nodded, sighing. "I'm sure it'll be okay though. His uncle and aunt are super strict."
"You really think so?" Dean asked.
You shrugged. "I hope so. I guess we'll see September 1st.""Are you sure you have everything?" your mother asked. "Your wand? Robes? Books?"
You laughed, nodding. "I promise, I have it all," you replied. "And if I don't I'll send an owl."
"I want to see an owl flying to our window no matter what," she said, shaking her finger at you. You raised your eyebrows, looking at your father. He chuckled, making your mother laugh as well. Laughing along, you hugged your parents tightly, kissing their cheeks.
"Be good, okay?" you told Josh, hugging him tightly.
"I'm gonna miss you," he said, his voice breaking.
"I'll miss you, too," you whispered. "But I'll write every week, okay?"
"Okay," he muttered, before letting you go.
You waved as you climbed onto the Hogwarts Express, smiling as Dean joined your side.
Stepping into the carriage, you started looking for an empty compartment, or at least some of your classmates. You tucked your legs under you, smiling at Dean, the fireplace on your left. "So what class do you think we'll have first?"
"I don't know," he muttered. "Herbology?"
"Uck," you complained, making Dean laugh.
You both perked up as the common room door opened, your jaws dropping as Harry and Ron stepped in.
You and Dean scrambled to stand, rushing towards. them "What happened?" you asked.
"Where were you?" Dean asked.
You four looked up as Hermione's voice rang down the stairs. "There you are!"
She rushed down to join you all, the group then moving towards the fireplace. You and Dean fell back into your original seats on the floor, with Harry, Ron, and Hermione sitting on the couch. "Well, it all started during summer break," Ron said, before launching off into the story, letting Harry take over in some parts.
