"Hey! Newt,"
Newt looked up from the book he was reading to see you walking briskly towards him. You sit in front of him, folding your hands on the table.
"Okay, so, it's my cousin's wedding this weekend and I was wondering if you would come with me,"
"Really?" Newt sounded doubtful.
"Oh, come on Newt. You're, like, my best friend. Of course I want you to come with me!" you exclaim. "And..."
"Woah, woah, woah. And what?" Newt asks.
"Well, the thing is..." you falter.
"Y/N," Newt sounds stern.
"I kind of told everybody we were dating," you say, covering your eyes with your hands.
"Everybody?"
"Yeah, well...my mom, my dad, and some other people..."
Newt put his head in his hands.
"Why did you tell them that, Y/N?"
"So that they didn't try to set me up with some stupid 'friend of the family'. Which they do at every other family gathering. I just thought it would be easier to hang out with you than have to reject a whole heap of guys all night,"
"Fine," Newt says.
"Oh, thank you!" you say, getting up and hugging him.
Although Newt would never admit it, the prospect of 'pretending' was slightly gloomy to him. It proved that you never saw him as anything more than a friend.
-
"Weddings take so long," Newt says to you quietly during the final toast of the evening.
"Oh come on, Newt. Get into the spirit. I love weddings," you say. Newt lets out a small snort.
"I do. One day, I'm going to find the perfect guy, and we'll have a stupidly expensive wedding,"
"You two can talk about your future wedding later. Now shush," your mother says.
You smile, biting your lip and Newt chuckles.
"They're so falling for it," you say.
The toasts end and the father-daughter dance commences. You and Newt stand up side by side.
"You know, we could play a game," you tell him quietly, eyes still fixated on the dancing.
"What does this game entail?" Newt asks.
"Well, to each relative who asks about our relationship, we can feed a different story. It will keep things fun, good practise for improvisation,"
"This is why we're friends," Newt whispers in your ear. You grin.
You didn't have to wait long. Some long lost relative approached you.
"So, is this the boyfriend your parents have been telling me about, Y/N?"
"Yes," you smile, grabbing Newt's hand.
"Aw, how did you two meet?"
"Oh, well, this is a great story. I was volunteering down at the police station, right, and they brought Newt in..."
"Oh yeah. They arrested me for drink-driving," Newt adds.
"But I didn't care. I knew from the moment I met him that he was the One," you say, wrapping your arms around his waist and giving him fake lovey-dovey eyes.
Your relative looks slightly horrified.
"Well...that's...oh, look! The bride and groom,"
She shuffles past you. Newt and you burst out laughing simultaneously. You are then approached by one of your second cousins.
"Ooooh, nice to see you, Y/N. Have you met...?"
"Oh yes, hi. This is my boyfriend, Newt,"
"Well, well, well, Y/N. Finally got a boyfriend, have you? How did you two meet?"
"Well, there was this fair that came to town a few months ago, and I heard Y/N bitching about how badly she wanted one of these toys, so I had to play the hero and win one for her,"
"Aw, that's so sweet," your cousin says.
"Yeah, well..."
Over the period of the night your stories got less stupid and more cutesy and romantic. After telling different stories to about thirty people, the two of you headed to the dance floor. Throughout the dance you particularly noticed the contact of your hands. The weird buzzing sensations going down your spine as you danced to the slow song. The song ends.
"I'm gonna go and get a drink,"
This whole thing is stupid, you think to yourself. I can't like Newt, he's my best friend! You were slightly dazed as you got your drink. Somebody you'd never met before came up to you. Presumably, they were from the groom's side of the family.
"Hi there," he says to you.
If there was the slightest chance Newt might like you back, it would be shown through jealousy.
"Hi," you say, smiling flirtatiously.
"So, I don't think we've met before,"
"I'm a cousin of the bride,"
The flirting is aimless and dead-ended, but luckily Newt does notice that you're taking a bit too long to just get a drink, and comes over to see the other boy flirting with you. He steps between you.
"Hi, I'm Y/N's boyfriend. I don't think we've met,"
You have to admire those words coming out of Newt's mouth. You liked hearing him call himself your 'boyfriend', even though he wasn't. The boy flushed red, apologising as Newt wrapped his arm around you.
"Can we get some fresh air?" you ask Newt.
"Sure,"
-
You exited the building with Newt into the cool evening air.
"Can we dance?" you ask him.
"There's no music,"
"We don't need music," you tell him, grabbing his hand and dancing with him.
"How did we meet, Newt?" you ask suddenly.
"Come on, Y/N, don't you remember?" he asks, pulling back slightly.
"Tell me again,"
"It was the freshman social, a few years back. Designed for us to get to know each other better. I was mucking around with some of my mates, when I looked up and saw you sitting there, alone. And I thought to myself, 'she's the most beautiful girl I've ever seen', so I walked over to you, and I asked you to dance. And your smile just lit up the room. And that's how we met,"
You smile at him.
"The most beautiful girl you'd ever seen?" you tease.
He looks at you, with perfect sincerity in his eyes. The smile fades from your face and your eyes avert from his, instead looking at his shoulder while you dance around.
"Shit," you sigh.
"What is it?"
"I think I actually like you,"
"And I like you," Newt responds, laughing.
He couldn't see how you were feeling, even though he was looking right at you. You change the stance of your dance, hooking your arms around his neck instead.
"That's not what I mean,"
"Then what do you mean?" Newt asks in all seriousness.
You kiss him then. The two of you are still dancing slowly, only now your lips are connected as you spin around.
"That's what I mean," you whisper.
