When your mind finally recognised what was happening, the world around you was a blur. It was like your brain was working slow while your surroundings were at two times speed. You didn't even fully know what was going on. The confusion that came next was even worse.
Where the hell were you? Why were you even here?
The mission.
Your head slumped forward. The mission: you had been kidnapped after Merlin had sent you and Eggsy to investigate terrorist activity on the outskirts of Europe. While on the mission, your intel had been wrong. While the file said that there would be ten or so terrorists (or suspected terrorists), there had been almost double. And, you had gotten ambushed. Eggsy had managed to escape, and was now...
Actually, you didn't know where Eggsy was.
A voice from your ear piece rang out. It didn't sound like it was talking to you, but you could still hear it. The voice was faint because your ear piece was dislodged, but it was loud enough for you to understand the voice. From what you could tell, the voice was definitely Merlin, and he sounded like he was talking to Eggsy. You groaned, lifting your head up slightly, trying desperately to angle your head so that you could hear him better.
"Eggsy, you need to go back to get Y/N."
Merlin stopped, listening this time.
"You can't leave them there. Go back for them now."
There's another pause, probably because Eggsy is replying. This gap in their conversation gives you time to think: time you wished you didn't have.
Your thoughts swirled round, like a storm threatening to swallow you up. 'He was going to leave me?' you thought, 'Well, I did ruin the mission... He wouldn't have to rescue me, if I didn't fail. He should've just left me here. He was in danger because of me.' Gradually, your head fell down, your spirit with it. Eggsy was right to leave you here: to forget about you. Right then, you were just about to give up- to give in.
But, you were torn from your mind and your thoughts, and your shoulder was gripped by a firm hand. You looked up, alert, and saw Eggsy, who made quick work of untying you.
"Come on, we've got to get out of here."
"Okay."
That was all you managed to say, all you could say. What explanation could you possibly give for failing him? Failing the whole organisation.
From that point on, you don't remember what happened, not exactly. You knew what was going on, but you didn't take it. The events that transpired over the next few hours washed past you, like you were watching them but not living them. They didn't touch- or you were just numb to their touch. When you joined Kingsman, you thought you had what it took to survive in those sorts of environments; maybe you were wrong..."Merlin," you called out, your eyes catching his as he was about to walk away. You knew he had heard everything that happened during that mission, and you also knew he deserved an explanation. But, your words failed you.
"Y/N, are you okay?" he asked, "I know the mission didn't go according to plan- the information we got was wrong. That was not your fault, Y/N... Y/N, what's going on? Is there something else?"
"I don't think I should be put out in the field anymore," you blurted out.
"What? Are you crazy? You're one of our best agents. I'm not pulling you out of missions-"
"-I'm a danger. A liability. Merlin, I can't go on another mission."
"Y/N, everyone has bad missions, things that go wrong. You can't let that make the rest of your decisions for your career in Kingsman."
You shook your head. Why didn't he understand?
"Merlin, I don't want to put anyone else in danger. Please, I can't go back on missions."
Little did you know, while you were discussing (well, more like arguing) with Merlin, Eggsy was close by. He caught the conversation- all of it. He didn't mean to listen in, not at first. But as soon as you asked to be removed from missions, he knew he needed to act. He couldn't let you make a decision like that: you were a great agent who needed to give more credit to themselves and their skills. Eggsy thought you were incredible: Eggsy knew you were incredible.
"I'll think it over, Y/N," Merlin told you, sighing slightly as he walked away.
"Thank you," you replied.
"Wait, you can't be serious? You're actually thinking of leaving missions?" Eggsy asked, it suddenly dawning on him that you were deadly serious.
"Eggsy, how long have you been listening?"
"It doesn't matter, Y/N. What matters-"
"Actually, it does. You can listen in like that, Eggsy. And, my decision is already made," you said, crossing your arms, "Give it up, Eggsy, you and I both know I ruined the mission."
"No, you didn't."
You sighed, looking sympathetically towards him. Were they all blind to your mistake? You shook your head and moved past him, lowering your eyes so that you broke eye contact with him. Eggsy looked to you, his gaze following you.
"Y/N, please. I care about you. A lot. And, I don't want to see you make a mistake like this," Eggsy confessed.
When you didn't turn around, he spoke up again.
"You're a fantastic agent, and you know it. Think of all the people you've helped, all the people you've saved. You're amazing, Y/N. You're not seriously going to give all of that up, are you?"
"Maybe... If it means I don't put anyone else in danger."
"Please, Y/N, listen."
You turned around. You couldn't tell if he was lying or not. Did he really think you were a good agent? Could it be true? You made eye contact with Eggsy, finally. He didn't seem to be lying. Then again, you could never be sure.
"But, I ruined it, Eggsy. I messed up- big time. I can't move on from that... I just... I just feel useless: I couldn't do anything to protect me or you."
"You're not useless, Y/N. I promise you that."
You sadly smiled.
"Maybe..."
"I can show you how useful you are- how you are an incredible agent, and an incredible person all round. Will you let me? Please?"
Maybe, Eggsy was right...
"I'll let you."
