I should be excited to be hanging out with my boyfriend. He invited me over to do homework with him, and I can't help but dread it.
While Pony has never been anything but amazing to me, I can't say the same for his brothers or the rest of his gang. They've given me to cold shoulder ever since I started dating Pony. A couple of them were even outright rude to my face. I'm not sure what I've done to end up on their bad side, but it's so intolerable that I avoid the Curtis household at all costs.
Now, the two of us sit at his kitchen table. He is trying to explain my math homework to me while the gang actively ignored us.
"This is stupid, Pony! I don't want to do it anymore!" I sighed, dropping my pencil on the table. "Why don't we just go to the Dairy Queen? I can do my homework later."
I saw Soda and Steve shoot their gaze in our directions but chose to ignore it. Guessing their thought won't help me anyway.
"Baby, we gotta get this done. Mr. Kirk told you that if you didn't start doing your homework, you'll have to retake the class." Pony placed his hand on top of mine with a sympathetic smile.
I don't know how Pony does. How all of this stuff comes so easy to him. I just can't understand it. None of it makes sense to me. It's not like any of it matters. I'm a greaser now, and I'll always be a greaser.
"I just don't get it, Pony. I'm gonna fail." My head fell back as I released another deep sigh. There was a moment of silence between us.
"I could just do it for you?" His hand went to pull my papers towards him only for me to stop him, slamming my own hand on top of his.
"If we get caught cheating, we'll both get suspended! You can't afford to be suspended Pony, they might take you off the track team," I argued, my lips forming a tight line.
"Wait a second," Sodapop interrupts, walking over to us, "you're telling me, he's never helped with your homework before?"
"No?" Pony answered with furrowed eyebrows. He tells me he doesn't know the reason for his friends disliking of me, but it annoys him to no end.
"Believe it or not, there are other things I enjoy doing much more with my boyfriend over homework," I sneered before sending a wink towards Pony. I giggled at his pink cheeks as he turned his attention back towards his textbook.
"Huh," his brother responded, heading back to the living room where the rest of the gang resided. We could hear the chatter between them, but not enough to understand what they're saying. Pony watched him leave in confusion.
"You know they think I'm using you, right?" I asked, arching an eyebrow. Soda made it clear.
"What?" He looked shocked.
"That's what that was all about. They clearly think I'm dating you because of your intelligence." I told him.
Ponyboy stood up quickly, turning to also make his way into the living room. I grabbed his wrist before he could move too far away from me.
"Just let it go, baby. They're just looking out for you," I cooed. "I wish I had people who looked out for me the way they look out for you."
He stepped back towards me, cupping my cheek his hand and leaning to place a short kiss on my hair line.
"You know I'll always have your back, right?" He whispered, leaning his forehead against my own.
"I know," I closed my eyes, "and hopefully, one day, they will too. I just have to prove myself to them."
The chatter in the living room suddenly stopped, causing the both of us to glance over. We were met with the comical sight of Steve and Two-Bit peeking over the back of the couch, nothing but their eyes visible.
"Can I help you?" Pony asked the two of them. They quickly shook their heads before turning their attention to the TV.
"What were they doing?" I heard Johnny ask. I couldn't help the giggles that escaped my lips. Johnny was always nice to me.
"Let's go to Dairy Queen. We've been working on this for hours, and no matter how much you pretend, I know you finished your stiff an hour ago." Pony blushed, looking at the ground. "We'll get an ice cream, take a breather, and maybe when we get back, I'll be able to understand the stupid numbers."
"Okay," he agreed, grabbing my hand with his own. He pulled me up from my seat, and as we reached the door, we were met with Dallas and Johnny.
"We're going with you," Dallas says bluntly. "These guys are fucking annoying."
The rest of the gang protested as we walked out the door and intertwined my fingers with Ponys. Dallas and Johnny walked in front of us.
"Make sure yall are back in time for dinner! It's a school night! That includes you, (Y/n)!" Darry called from the door as we made our way down the street.
Dallas turned around, giving the older boy the bird and Pony just waved him off.
As the boys began to tease each other I felt my heart grow warm. They're starting to accept me.
