I sat on the roof of my house with a cancer stick hanging from my lips. My mother has a 'friend' over and you could say that they're a little loud. I pulled my jacket around me as a cold chill ran through my body. It was peaceful on my roof, was. Our neighbors began fighting. I don't understand why you would marry someone you couldn't go a day without fighting with them. Maybe they were happy once, but now they should just end it. I jumped when I heard the sound of a window screech open and saw our neighbors son jump out of the window. I couldn't see his face but I could hear him crying. I looked over the side of the roof to see him standing up on shaky legs.
"Hey, are you okay?" I asked from the roof, causing him to jump and look up at me. "I didn't mean to scare."
"I'm alright." He stuttered. "I'm just gonna go to a friend's."
"It's not safe to be walking right now. I heard some mustangs drive by a while ago." If it were even possible he started to shake even more. There was an uncomfortable silence between us. "If you want, you can come up here." He looked up at me with an unsure look. Finally, after weighing his options, he made his way up the ladder on the side of the house. Once he reached the top he carefully walked over to me and sat down. I looked at him to see a bruise on the side of his face and a scar under his eye. "I'm Beth."
"I'm Johnny." He said quietly.
"I've lived beside you my entire life and never knew your name." I chuckled. "That's crazy."
"Yeah, I guess it is." He said after thinking fir a moment.
"So, have they always been like this?" I asked out of curiosity.
"As far as I can remember." He shrugged. "I think they were fine until I came along." He admitted.
"Well that's not your fault." I reassured him. He sent a small smile my way and I figured I should drop the subject. It seems to make him uncomfortable. We played a game of 21 questions and then layed on the roof and looked at the stars in a comfortable silence. The last thing I remember before my heavy eyelids closed and pulled me into a deep sleep was Johnnys voice.
"Thanks for this Beth." His quiet voice said.
The next morning I woke up very early, just as the sun was rising. My head was on Johnnys chest and he had an arm wrapped around me. Once I realized the position we were in a deep blush cane to my cheeks and carefully pulled myself away before lightly shaking Johnny awake.
"What happened?" He asked, rubbing his eyes.
"We fell asleep." I yawned. "You could go to your friends now if you want." He nodded his head in response.
"U-umm," He started. "Would you like to come with me?" He asked nervously. I felt an eruption of butterflies in my stomach and automatically knew what I was going to say.
"Yeah, I'd like that a lot."
