"Did you just shout at a parent to shut up?" Marjorie asked sternly."Yeah....," Charlotte replied quietly. She tried to avoid eye contact.
"Okay, Charlotte, I think it's better if you go home for today. And you'll be working at Reece's from tomorrow. Maybe you'll come to work with a better attitude." Marjorie hated it when she spoke to her like that.
Charlotte glared at her. She wanted to scream. Was she blind? Did she not realise what was going on? But all the words stuck in her throat. Only a quiet "Whatever..." left her mouth.
She left work in a hurry.
She didn't speak to anyone.
She didn't want to justify herself.
She didn't want to face anyone. When she finally dropped into her car. She just sat there for a moment. It boiled inside her. Charlotte wasn't the type to get angry. But everything was just too much.
She hit her steering wheel with all her might, over and over again. Until her palms were burning.
Charlotte stopped and let out an agonising gasp.
She had finally arrived home and made it to her front door with difficulty.
Charlotte entered the house. Empty. The children were with their father for the next few days. She took a few steps forward and closed the door behind her.
The silence was unbearable. Charlotte felt the pain rising inside her. Her legs gave way. Her knees hit the floor with a loud thud.
She sat here. Feeling more alone and empty than ever before. When everything she had been holding back for months came out of her all at once.
She could barely breathe between her tears. The scene that unfolded was uncontrolled and ugly.
It felt like it was about to tear her apart.
It was getting dark. Charlotte had finally made it from the floor to the couch. She sat there in the dark, alone. The television was on so she could hear something other than her thoughts.
Her mobile phone lay next to her.
Charlotte glanced at the display.Messages from her colleagues were waiting there for her.
"What is going on?" from Sorsha.
"Are you ok?" from Winter.
"Charlotte, please get in touch, I'm worried." from Carly.
Normally she would answer immediately. But she didn't had the strength. She also felt betrayed by them. Only now, after all this time, did they come and ask for her.
Charlotte picked up the phone and turned it over. That was really the last thing she needed. Feigned pity. Wait a minute. She was slightly frightened of herself. What was she thinking? She stood up in frustration. Her thoughts were getting to her. She needed a glass of wine.
The next morning was tough. She barely made it out of bed. What's more, you could see that she had been up late. She was glad that she could at least get some sleep.
The other nursery was familiar but still strange. The day dragged on.
"Reece. Here are a few more documents for you."
Charlotte wanted to put the documents on his desk. But chaos awaited her there. There were countless papers scattered around."What's that?" she asked.
Reece, who was massaging his temples, looked up.
"Mia's reports. They're very detailed..."
Charlotte looked at the handwriting. It was more than familiar to her.
"Beautiful writing..."
Reece looked at her critically. "Yes, it's like the writing on the card. The one you got with the roses."
