The Knight

Autumn stepped out of the bathroom. She was getting ready for today's meeting.

She took a quick look at herself in the mirror wardrobe. She had already done her hair and make-up. Only the clothes were missing.

She opened the wardrobe and took out a white blouse and a pair of suit trousers.

When she closed the wardrobe door again, she was startled. Winter was suddenly standing behind her in the mirror.

"Don't sneak up on me like that!"

Winter couldn't help but laugh.
" I'm sorry, my love." He wrapped his arms around her waist and kissed her shoulder.

" Are you nervous?" he asked.

" A little....but we will win today."

Winter nodded. Autumn had told him that Marjorie had turned out to be the Silent Partner. And today would be the meeting to finally vote Roger out.

Autumn turned round in his arms and gave him a kiss.

"I'm worried about you..." whispered Winter.

" Don't be. No one knows that Marjorie will turn up today to cast her vote..." she put a hand on his cheek.

Winter couldn't help but look in the mirror, where he had a clear view of her naked back.

Every time he saw it, he felt sick. Countless scars were visible there. Small, large, deep ones that had healed badly and fine ones that were almost invisible.

Autumn wore them like a suit of armour.

Winter still remembers the first time he saw them. They hadn't been together that long. He was so shocked at the time that he simply called out and asked what had happened.

What was revealed shocked him to the bone.

Autumn broke down in tears and told him that her father had always beaten her with a belt as a child when she disappointed him. Now she would disappoint him again and Winter was afraid of what he would do.

Autumm met her brother and Mia outside Roger's office.

Mia stood there with her arms crossed and a clearly annoyed look on her face. "I don't know why we even came! This is a total waste of time!""

"Mia, this time it's going to be different... Just vote against Roger!" Reece spoke sternly.

The redhead raised her eyebrow. " If you say so.."

Roger cleared his throat. He looked round the room. Siobhan was sitting to his right. Reece was sitting on the left. Mia had sat next to Siobhan. And Autumn sat at the other end of the table, directly opposite her father. The seat next to Reece was still empty.

"So, as already announced, today is the election for a possible new owner. Autumn and yours truly have put themselves forward. The votes will be cast shortly. However, as they are family members, their personal opinions could distort the election result. Reece and Autumn, like myself, are excluded from the vote. Mia and Siobhan in front of you is the ballot paper."

Autumn and Reece exchanged a quick glance.

"Dad, what about the silent partner?" Reece asked innocently.

"I've already got his vote," mumbled Roger.

"Really?" Autumn asked with feigned surprise.

Suddenly there was a knock at the door. Marjorie entered the room.

"Marjorie, what are you doing here? We're in an important meeting," said Roger.

The manager sat down next to Reece. "I'm here to cast my vote. After all, I'm also a member of the Board of Directors. Or am I wrong Roger?"

A broad grin formed on Mia's face. "No way....", she whispered.

Siobhan also had to pull up the corner of her mouth for a moment. She gave Marjorie a look that said, 'So you've figured it out'.

Roger's face turned red. He had been caught out. But he had no choice but to give Marjorie a ballot paper.

The result was no surprise.

Roger had to pull himself together not to freak out, he stared darkly at his daughter. "Congratulations Autumn...."

She stood up. "Father, now that I'm the new owner. You're banned from the Nursery's. I also want your office cleared out tomorrow!"

" As you wish......." he looked closely at everyone in the room." Enjoy your victory..."

The glasses clinked. After the meeting, everyone met up in a pub to celebrate.

" Sweetheart! You should have seen his face! He didn't know what hit him!" Mia shouted with a laugh, putting her arm around Charlotte.

Winter leant towards Autumn. "My love, I'm proud of you..."

"Thank you my sweet."

Reece, who had also put his arm around Marjorie, held up his glass to Autumn. "To the new owner!"

Autumn and Winter arrived back home.

Winter was just getting their jackets out of the car. Autumn, however, had already entered the house.

She switched on the light and was just about to go into the kitchen when she stopped in front of the living room door.

A shiver ran down her spine. She stood rooted to the spot.

"Autumn, are you ok?" asked Winter. He stepped next to her. " Oh my God."

There on the floor of her living room lay a Doberman. Dead. Slashed from throat to belly. A large pool of blood had formed.

Autumn turned away.

A dead dog. A dead guard dog.

That was a threat. She was the guard dog.

Autumn may have won the fight, but the war was yet to come.

The two weren't the only ones who had a nasty surprise waiting for them at home.

Reece couldn't even pull out of the driveway of Marjorie's house. When she called him in a panic.

There were numerous dead piranhas in her bathtub.

Mia and Charlotte also made a gruesome discovery. The redhead opened her girlfriend's bedroom door and immediately looked into the eyes of a dead fox.

It was lying disembowelled on Charlotte's bed.

Now everyone had gathered at Reece's house with their loved ones.

Charlotte, Marjorie and Winter had already gone to bed.

The guard dog, the piranha and the fox, however, were still awake. They were sitting together in the kitchen.

"We have to do something about him..." Autumn said, looking at Mia. Who was sitting at the kitchen table drinking a whiskey.

"That was just the beginning Autumn. We're as good as dead," Mia whispered. She could still remember the situation on the golf course.

"Unless he dies first..." Reece turned round. He had been staring silently out of the window the whole time.

Autumn nodded in agreement.

"What do you say, Mia. Are you in?"
