The silence was oppressive. Autumn had been staring at the white wall for minutes now. She was in a side room of the hospital, waiting for Sergeant Miller.
Vivian had been with her a few minutes ago and had put a glass of water in front of her. The nurse hadn't said much, though. Just the usual in such situations. 'We're doing everything we can.'
'I can't say much just yet, but she's in the best of hands.Autumn slowly woke up from her shock, her throat was so dry. As she moved her hand from her lap to the table to reach for the glass of water, she stopped.
Her palm was red. Smeared with the blood of a friend.
When Winter got the call, he thought his world had stopped. He had set off straight away. He met Reece and Marjorie in the hospital car park.
The group was now in the hospital's waiting area. They were told that someone would soon come to them and explain everything.
Marjorie was nervously playing with her hands when a voice rang out.
"Marjorie!"
The manager looked up and when she saw the woman, she immediately thought of Mia. That's how she looked when she heard the news of Charlotte's death.
Marjorie stood up and fell into her arms.
"You didn't see the person?" Miller asked.
Autumn just nodded, a forensic scientist was taking swabs of her hands.
"Well Mrs Fortune-Knight, you must understand that you are currently a suspect."
Autumn didn't react, what could she say. She realised it sounded unbelievable. The killer had spared her only to shoot someone else.
"We're done for now, except To hear from us in further notice.", the sergeant said coldly.
As Autumn left the room, she could already hear it. The painful crying. She didn't want to look her in the eye. What could she say?
Winter saw her. " My Love!" He quickly went to her and hugged her. " Is everything all right?"
" Nothing happened to me..." Autumn whispered.
They approached the others in the waiting room. Reece just looked at Autumn with concern and Marjorie still held the crying woman in her arms.
Autumn stood in front of her, not knowing what to say. " Clodagh... I..."
But she was interrupted as Clodagh hugged her tightly. She didn't have to speak, Autumn knew she didn't blame her.
The hours that followed were unbearable and painful. Vivian came around from time to time. But she could say no more than that Sorscha was still in surgery.
Autumn had spent almost an hour washing the blood off her hands.
As the midnight hour dawned, the Head Doctor finally came to them.
" Family of Mrs. Doyle?"
"Please tell me my wife is all right," said Clodagh desperately.
The doctor cleared his throat. " She had suffered severe internal haemorrhaging. The bullet pierced her left lung. She is currently in a stable condition, but in an induced coma until further notice."
The days passed and Sorscha's condition did not change. The investigation was in full swing. Two victims in one month. Autumn was ruled out as a suspect for now.
But the mood among the Nursery staff became increasingly tense. Who could be behind all this?
Neither Charlotte nor Sorscha had any enemies.
But it was now clear that Charlotte was intentionally target. While Sorscha was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Reece and Autumn did everything they could to keep the Nursery closed for the time being. But Roger voted against it.
So now, less than a week after the attempted murder of Sorscha, Marjorie was sitting in her office.
The manager had made sure that Autumn stayed at home for the time being. She knew how bad it was to see something like that. Marjorie couldn't get the images of Charlotte lying on the floor covered in blood out of her mind.
"Knock, knock," a soft but venom-soaked voice rang out.
"Janice..." growled Marjorie.
"I'm just here to deliver a message from Roger." She sat down opposite Marjorie in the deputy manager's chair. "Actually, he wanted me to work here, until it's sorted out. But I have a Nursery to run myself."
"Well, thank goodness," said Marjorie.
Janice was not impressed, by Marjorie comment."I have to say, Marjorie. Roger should have realised by now that you're not cut out for this job. You have a murderer in your midst."
The manager clutched her armrest. Who did this woman think she was?
"But that doesn't matter now. Deliah will work here until Autumn is back from her holiday."
"Autumn has seen something terrible and needs to process it!" Marjorie exclaimed.
Janice smiled at her. "Of course. But we still have a business to run. " she stood up. "I just hope that when the merger finally happens, there will still be staff left." With that, she left.
Marjorie was boiling with rage. Not only did she have to put up with Janice's arrogance. No, now she also had Deliah on her back.
But one thing was certain. The murderer wasn't finished with their games yet. Fuelled by love and hate, they now had another target in sight.
