"So that was your last day," Marjorie said happily.

Autumn raised her eyebrow. " I'll still be working from home."

" Autumn! You've been here longer than you need to be."

But the dark brown-haired now looked at her sceptically. "I'm deputy manager."

" Doesn't matter! You're pregnant. About to give birth. Let work be work!"

" Whatever Marjorie. Are you finished, can we go?"

The two women left the Nursery.
Winter was already waiting for his wife at the car.

The next few weeks were normal for Marjorie, well, she had a lot more work. Now that Autumn was on maternity leave. Reece and she visited her several times a week to check on her.

Autumn was doing well. She was just a little annoyed that she couldn't do as much. She and Winter didn't want to tell anyone the gender of there child.

Reece couldn't wait to finally become an uncle.

Marjorie looked up in surprise when she saw Winter in her office. " Winter? I thought you wanted to take the week off."

"I wanted to, but Autumn insisted that she was fine and that I should work. But as you know, she's already three days past her due date, so I'll have my mobile phone on me. Just in case."

"Of course, no problem," Marjorie smiled at him.

At lunchtime, just as Marjorie was coming back from lunch with Reece, Winter stormed into the office and nearly ran her over.

"I've got to go! Autumn just rang!" he shouted.

"Then go! Keep us updated!"

No matter how much Marjorie wanted to go, there was no one to cover for her. And so, for better or worse, she had to stay here. Until the working day was over. Well, at least Reece was on his way to the hospital by now.

She got another message from him. That he was waiting in the hospital waiting room.

This message was hours ago. She hadn't received any other updates. Neither from Reece nor Winter.

The manager was starting to get a little anxious, but didn't want to worry too much.

When it was finally seven o'clock. She set off straight away.

After being directed to the right station by the registration desk, she looked for Reece. But didn't find him in the waiting area.

Marjorie decided to write him a message, but got no reply.

Then she tried Winter, even though she didn't think she would get anything back. But to her surprise, she got a reply straight away.

'Room 129', was all he wrote.

Strange. Marjorie thought to herself. But she set off in search of the room.

When she finally found it, she entered without knocking.

She found Winter sitting on a chair. He was holding something wrapped in cloth in his arms.

"Winter!" she quickly went to him.

In his arms lay an infant, sleeping peacefully. The little one had Winter's thick black hair.

" Oh my god! How cute! Boy or girl?"

" Girl..." whispered Winter without looking up.

" Congratulations! I can hardly believe it!"

" Marjorie...", Winter whispered.

" Have you named her yet? I'm sure you have. Autumn must have already chosen one!"

"Marjorie!" Winter spoke sternly and looked up.

The manager was surprised by the tone of her friend. She only now realised how exhausted he looked and his eyes were clearly red.

"I can't worry about that now," he said in a shaky voice.

Marjorie didn't understand what was going on. But then she took a good look around the room. The hospital bed was freshly made and their bag, with all their things , was on it.

"Autumn. Is not here...." Marjorie asked cautiously.

Winter shook his head weakly.

" Did she..."

" Yes..." he managed to get out, tears forming in his eyes.

A shock went through Marjorie's body. She had to sit down. Unable to find a clear thought. "What happened?" she asked quietly.

Winter shrugged his shoulders weakly.
"They had to do an emergency C-section. Autumn just didn't wake up from the anaesthetic. There was nothing more there could do.."

"Where is Reece?" Marjorie was in a daze. She couldn't grasp what had happened.

"With her... He wanted to see her..."

There was silence in the room.

"Winter... How are you?" Marjorie knew this question was stupid, but she couldn't manage a clear thought in her shock.

"I don't know."
