I will continue with the case in the next chapter. I wanted to thematise some world building and character relationships in this one. Hope that's ok and not too boring 😅_____________________________
With a loud thud, the list of buyers landed on Marjorie's desk. The sergeant looked up. "Sorscha, are you all right? I heard what happened in the shop."
The Irishwoman nodded slowly.
" Go home, my love. Clodagh is already waiting for you at the car."
Sorscha opened the office door, and at the same moment, Reece stepped into the room. He and Charlotte had just come back from Miller's old job. He was an estate agent before he became unemployed. His clients were mostly the rich of London, so that was how he was able to build his contacts.
Reece also placed a large file of Miller's last clients on Marjorie's desk. The sergeant closed the file she had received from Mia. Which she had found in Miller's flat.
"We should all go home. It's getting late," said Reece.
"I'll go to the pub with your sister."
" Why? Do you want to stop her from making Sarah's life a living hell?" asked Reece with a slight grin.
"More or less." Marjorie stood up and gave her boyfriend a kiss.
"How did you get her to go to the pub with you in the first place? Did you ask her as her friend or as her superior?"
"Both," Marjorie said dryly.
Reece laughed slightly. "I thought you didn't want to mix business and pleasure."
Sorscha stepped out of the police station and walked towards the car park. Clodagh was already standing in front of her car. The look on her wife's face said it all. Sorscha sighed softly, stepped up to her, put her hand on her stomach, and gave Clodagh a gentle kiss on the forehead.
The journey home was silent. Sorscha kept looking at her. But Clodagh just looked out of the window.
"Babe, what's wrong?" Sorscha asked cautiously.
"I could have lost you today! I can't lose you and especially not now!" Clodagh cried, her eyes glassy.
Sorscha carefully placed her hand on Clodagh's thigh. "I had everything under control..."
"Sorscha, stop it!" she interrupted her."... all it took was for a bullet to ricochet somewhere and hit you! You'll be wearing a bulletproof vest from now on! I don't care that you find them uncomfortable! I never want you lying on my table! Never..." her voice became quiet at the end.
Sorscha stroked her thigh carefully. "That will never happen, I promise. From tomorrow, I won't set foot in the field without a bulletproof vest."
The front door hadn't even opened fully when Charlotte's daughter jumped into her arms.
"Mum!" cried the girl.
"Hey, my little one," Charlotte hugged her tightly.
"I have something to show you, come on!" The girl ran back into the house and up the stairs.
" Lexi! Not so fast!" shouted Thomas, Charlotte's ex-husband.
The two adults made brief eye contact. Before Thomas stepped aside so that Charlotte could enter.
"Where's Lauren?" Charlotte asked.
"With friends."
"Didn't she know I was coming to visit today?"
Thomas flopped down on the sofa. "She's fifteen, Charlotte. I told her you were coming today. But her friends were more important."
Charlotte crossed her arms. Since separating from her husband, she rarely saw her children during the week. They lived with him because she simply didn't have the time due to her job.
"Lexi has a football match on Friday," said Thomas.
"This Friday?"
The man nodded and looked at her critically. "Don't tell me you don't have time."
" We have this case..."
" Charlotte!" he interrupted her. "You're her mum. Let your job take second place for once!"
Marjorie and Autumn had taken a seat at a corner bench in the King's Club. The two women had ordered their drinks.
"So, how was your first day with Sarah?"
Autumn just raised her eyebrows and took a big sip from her wine glass.
" Oh, come on, Autumn!"
" Let it go, Marjorie. I just don't want a new partner. Mia was my partner, and no one will be able to replace her."
"Mia is with the MI6 now, and that's not going to change. At least try to get along with her," Marjorie said desperately, she couldn't have another detective quitting because of Autumn.
"Suit yourself. Although I'd like to know how much my brother is betting on Sarah quitting."
Marjorie exhaled loudly. "That man..."
"You've fallen for him."
"The way you fallen for Winter?" Marjorie said, grinning slightly.
If looks could kill, Marjorie would have fallen off her chair.
Mia had made herself comfortable on the couch, she was scrolling on her phone and wanted to enjoy the evening. It was strange to be back in her old flat.
Mia's eyes almost fell shut when there was a knock on the door. The redhead grumbled, who wanted something from her now?
When she opened the door, she was surprised to see two familiar eyes.
" Char...?"
The brunette didn't say anything, she pushed Mia backwards into the flat and closed the door behind them.
" I want a suspect! Do you know how much damage there is in that shop!"
Marjorie rubbed her eyes and looked up at Siobhan. She was standing angrily in front of her desk. The blonde was a prosecutor and worked closely with her unit.
"We're on it. My detectives are analysing our findings from yesterday."
" Tell them to work faster! The press are already like vultures! I want a suspect by the end of this week at the latest!" With that, the blonde turned round and slammed the door.
The investigators sat scattered around the conference room and rummaged through the papers. There had to be a match somewhere.
Suddenly, Charlotte's voice rang out. " Coates! Miller got a penthouse for James Coates last year. He then bought cocaine from him!"
"James Coates also bought ammunition in the hunting shop," said Sorscha.
"Well, then we finally have a suspect," said Reece.
Autumn stood up. "I'm going to pay him a visit."
Sarah wanted to get up, too, but Mia jumped up. " I'm coming with you. To relive the old day. Right Autumn?," said the redhead with a grin.
