The key fell out of her hand, it was early in the morning and Mia had just come back from the bar.

She bent down to pick up the key, and after several attempts she finally managed to hit the keyhole.

After the door fell open, she stumbled in, dragging herself forwards. She kept tripping over things lying on the floor.

"God, I have to tidy up..." the redhead muttered.

Her throat was so dry, she urgently needed something to drink.

It was still dark outside, so she had to switch on the light. When the kitchen lit up, she immediately saw the person standing at the kitchen counter.

" Sweetheart? Don't scare me like that!" her words were slurred.

Charlotte gave her a sad look. "How many times already, have you been out drinking all night?"

Mia dropped onto a stool at the kitchen island. "Phew, good question." She grinned at her.

"Mia, you have to stop doing that."

" Why? Just let me have my fun."

Charlotte sighed. " You're ruining yourself..."

The redhead put her arms on the worktop in front of her, she was so tired, that she had to hold her head. Had the kitchen always been this dirty?

There were restaurant wrappers and empty bottles of alcoholic drinks everywhere.

Charlotte stood opposite her and just looked at her. Too far away from Mia to touch her.

"Take it easy baby... I'll stop, eventually."

"Mia, you have to talk to the others, they're worried about you."

" Why should there be worried? I'm fine."

The brunette walked around the kitchen island, now standing right next to her.
"Mia, stop blaming yourself... and stop numbing your senses. You have to let go."

The redhead looked up at her, into her girlfriend's blue eyes. " What are you talking about?"

Charlotte put her hand on the newspaper lying on the kitchen counter. The paper was already torn in places, as if it had been there for months. "I'm talking about this. It wasn't your fault. Nobody could have prevented it... Please stop what you're doing... for me..."

Mia tried to concentrate on the words of the newspaper article Charlotte was pointing at.

The brunette took her hand back and Mia grabbed the paper and pulled it closer to her.

In her drunken state, it was difficult to make sense of the words. But she could make out the picture on the paper. It was a picture of a road accident. She focussed more.

Above the picture was written in capital letters.

'Serious traffic accident in city centre! Driver dead!'

Mia didn't know why, but suddenly a thousand emotions came to her. Tears welled up in her eyes. She finally had to face reality, the truth.

"Sweetheart... don't leave me!" But when she looked next to her, she was gone.

Mia was alone in the house. As she had been for months.
