The King

The green grass glistened in the sunlight. A light breeze was blowing.

The golf course was still deserted in the early morning, except for a small group of men.

A woman approached with quick steps. She stopped behind the man who was practising his swing. The other men around him looked at her critically.

"Roger!"

He stopped in the middle of his swing.

"What do you want Mia?"

"A word!"

Roger didn't let himself be disturbed and continued to practise his swings. "You can talk to me when I get to the office."

Mia stepped closer to him. She saw the men standing around Roger move into a dangerous position.

"This can't wait!" She waited for him to give her his attention.

But Roger simply ignored her.

Mia gritted her teeth. "The next time you try to sabotage my girlfriend's car, I'll set your house on fire!"

Roger turned around to face her. He pressed his golf club into the hand of one of his companions.

He approached the woman with slow steps. Mia had to lift her head to look him in the eye.

He reached for the pendant around her neck. " A heart.... Do you have to wear this around your neck because you don't have one?"

Mia crossed her arms. She didn't want to be intimidated by him and stood stubbornly.

"Where have I seen this necklace before?" he asked.

They both knew the answer.

Roger let go of the pendant. "It reminds me of a story, about a girl from a poor family, who found her way into the home of a very rich family. The eldest son of this family fall in love with her. Sadly, she only had eyes for other women."

Mia grinned. "When young boys and girls become friends, awkward situations can arise. Sometimes, I've heard, even an older man can develop certain affections for a much younger woman. Who is also his employee. And when those affections become common knowledge. It can lead to very awkward situations. Especially in a rich family. And when the head of this family is also is involved in criminal business, well that is a very awkward situation indeed."

Roger stared at her. He clenched his fists.

But Mia didn't let up and carried on. "Rich families often forget a simple truth I've learnt."

"And which truth is that?"

The redhead smiled." That the poor people are always listening. And knowing things is far more powerful than money."

Roger stared deep into her eyes, but then he smiled slightly. He turned to the men behind him. "Get her."

Before Mia could react, she was grabbed and pulled to her knees.

Roger stood in front of her and looked down. "I'm bored of this conversation. Kill her."

Mia felt the end of a gun against the back of her head. She closed her eyes.

"No, wait. I've changed my mind. Let her go."

The hands that held her to the ground Detached themselves from her. Mia immediately jumped to her feet. She looked startled at Roger, who hadn't moved an inch.

"Step back. " he said.

The men around Mia took a few steps back.

"Go somewhere else and continue to play golf." The men immediately listened to his words and left the two of them standing there.

Roger now came very close to Mia. He leant towards her and whispered in her ear.
"Money is power."

He patted her on the shoulder and gave her a slight smile. Before he left her there and went after the men.

The shock was still in Mia's stomach and she reached for her pendant.
