Charlotte watched Roger leave the building in a huff. Before he stepped out of the front door, he gave her a dark look.

Not a second later, Mia stepped in front of her.

"What was that?" Charlotte asked.

The redhead grinned. "Well, Daddy deares has just lost his position as owner. Autumn is taking over now."

"You made it?" Charlotte laughed and jumped round her girlfriend's neck.

" Yes, it was a struggle, but we've finally got rid of the idiot. We need to celebrate. Are you coming to my place tonight?"

Charlotte nodded and gave her a kiss.

The two of them decided to have a relaxed film evening and had ordered sushi.

But Charlotte quickly realised that something was bothering Mia.

"Is everything all right?"

The redhead stopped poking around in her food and looked at her.

" Oh.... I'm a bit worried that Roger will do something..."

Charlotte tilted her head. "What do you mean? You said yourself that he's a coward."

Mia ran her fingers through her hair. " He's a coward. But not the people who work for him."

The brunette put her hand on her girlfriend's thigh.

"Mia, can you finally tell me everything?"

Mia thought about it for a moment, but decided to get it off her chest. " Roger didn't just make all his money with the Nursery. He's involved in criminal business. I'm just worried that he's trying to get even with us...."

" Roger is not a mafia boss. Do you really think he would do anything to you or his children?"

Mia shook her head. "No, he wouldn't do that. But If he did anything, he would hurt us by taking what we love most. " she looked at Charlotte.

"That won't happen..." she leant towards the redhead and kissed her deeply.

A loud bang echoed through the house.

"Mia..." whispered Charlotte, shaking the woman next to her.

" .....What?" Mia asked in a raspy voice.

"Someone's here."

The redhead was immediately wide awake and sat up in bed.

"Char, call the police ....." she got up from the bed and walked quietly to the bedroom door, where she lingered for a moment. Another noise was heard. Mia grabbed the baseball bat that was leaning against the wall next to the door. She turned to Charlotte, who already had her mobile phone to her ear. " Stay here..."

Mia stepped carefully out of the bedroom, the house was dark. She took careful steps.

When suddenly she heard the crack of glass. She looked down the stairs into the hallway below. The glass of her front door was broken.

Mia clutched the baseball bat tightly and crept silently down the stairs.

She carefully stepped over the broken glass on the floor and looked into the corridor. All quiet, all dark.

She continued to walk carefully. Mia's heart was racing, but she tried to ignore it.

She walked close to the wall and looked round the corner into the living room. Nobody was there.

Had the burglar left already? The redhead looked around.

But her sense of security was interrupted when a figure suddenly appeared in front of her

Through the dimm light, she saw that the figure was holding something in his hand. He pointed it towards her.

She immediately jumped to the side to take cover behind an armchair.

A shot rang out and the vase standing behind Mia on the dresser shattered into a thousand pieces.

The figure walked towards the armchair with his gun drawn.

"Greetings from Roger," he said in a deep, dark voice.

With a jerk, he looked behind the armchair, but his target had disappeared.

Mia suddenly emerged from the darkness next to him and struck his arm, in which he was holding the gun, with her bat.

It fell to the floor. The man immediately tried to send a punch in her direction. But he missed.

Mia caught up again and hit him on the shoulder. The man staggered backwards.

She used this this to kick him in the chest. This threw him completely off balance and he fell to the ground. Unfortunately for Mia, he fell next to the weapon.

She quickly went to him to deliver another blow with the baseball bat.

But the man was quicker and grabbed the weapon. He pointed it at the redhead for a second, but then pulled his arm to the side and shot into the darkness next to her.

The baseball bat hit the man full force in the face and he fell to the side.

Mia was breathing heavily, the bat still clutched tightly in her hand. Roger that damn bastard really wanted to kill her.

"Mia.....", a faint whisper sounded behind her.

There in the doorway between the living room and the hallway stood Charlotte. The shock was written all over her face.

Mia was relieved to see her at first, but then her heart sank.

The white top her girlfriend was wearing quickly turned red in her stomach area.

Mia dropped the bat and ran to her. She had just reached her when she had to catch Charlotte.

"Hey....Hey...Sweetheart, look at me! Stay awake!" cried Mia desperately. She pressed her hand to the bullet wound on her stomach.

The warm red oozed out between her fingers.

Charlotte was so shocked that she couldn't say anything at first. Her breathing was irregular and rapid, her body writhing in pain in her girlfriend's arms.

" Help will be here soon! Charlotte look at me!"

The brunette's eyes focussed and she looked into her eyes.

" Mia.....", she clung to the arm that was desperately trying to keep her blood inside her body.

Tears dripped onto the brunette. "Please, you can't leave me now..." Mia's voice was weak.

Charlotte's body became calmer. The pain slowly left her. She was glad that she was in Mia's arms, it took away her fear. She managed to bring her hand to Mia's cheek. "I love you..." she whispered weakly.

Mia heard the siren and saw the blue-red light shining through the front door and now dancing on the walls in the corridor.

"Sweetheart, help is here!"

Mia felt Charlotte's hand slip from her cheek. When she looked at the woman in her arms. She could no longer see anything in her eyes.

Charlotte's gaze was fixed on nothing.

Mia went cold, everything around her stopped.

When the police stormed through the front door, all they heard was a pained scream.
