Charlotte tossed and turned restlessly in bed. She turned to Mia. After weeks, she was now lying again next to her. She should be overjoyed that the redhead had forgiven her, but Charlotte was raging with fear.
What would happen if Roger lost his position? She would be naive if she thought he would just disappear. No, he would make her life hell.
Charlotte knew that there was a target on her back, but not only on her back but also on the backs of her children and Mia.
She watched the sleeping woman next to her. Mia looked so peaceful, her chest slowly rising and falling. Even though she knew Mia would do anything to make sure she stays safe, would she really be able to protect her?
Charlotte sighed and turned back to the other side. When her phone lit up on the bedside table. She furrowed her eyebrows.
'You're in a pretty dangerous situation. Let me help you,' wrote an unknown number.
Charlotte looked at the display, confused. Who was that? Especially so late at night?
'Who is that? '
It didn't take long for the next message to arrive. 'So you're awake, very good. I think you know exactly who I am. So, do you want my help? '
Charlotte walked through the darkness until she finally arrived at the agreed meeting point. She sat down on the park bench and waited. It didn't take long before she heard footsteps coming through the dark.
"Good to see you, Charlotte."
Charlotte didn't raise her eyes, the woman sat down next to her, and the air immediately filled with the smell of smoke.
"I suppose Roger knows what's going to happen at the meeting tomorrow."
Janice laughed lightly. " No, I didn't tell him about your reconciliation."
"Why?" Charlotte asked, surprised.
Janice blew smoke into the air. " Why should I? What do I have to gain from it? Roger's trust? I already have that. Money? I have that, too. A place on the board as a member? I'm already on there. It wouldn't bring me any advantages."
"But going after Vivian for Roger was in for it?" Charlotte didn't trust the woman for a second.
"Oh, that was just for old time sake. I have to say. " Janice looked at her hand. " This nurse takes quite the punch... Now, enough of that, you're probably wondering how I can help you."
The brunette remained silent. She was interested in what Janice would tell her now, but she was afraid of what she would want in return.
"It would be foolish to think that Roger would just leave you alone after he's no longer an the owner."
"I realise that." She was starting to get nervous.
Janice raised her eyebrow, she didn't like Charlotte's tone, she should watch what she said. "The best thing you can do is vote for Roger."
" What?! That's your advice."
" Listen to me first. Vote for him, then resign from the Board of Directors, take your share of the money, and then move somewhere far away from here with your children. Then you'll be safe. Of course, you will lose your newfound trust and your little redhead. But what's your other option? The blood of your children on your hands?"
Charlotte had to admit, Janice was right. What she told her sounded more promising than Mia's promise to protect her. She rubbed her face. "How do you do it?" she asked quietly.
" What?"
" Playing this game. Regardless of the consequences."
Janice grinned and took another puff. " Simple. Everyone is my friend and my enemy. I imagine every scenario in my head that could happen, and nothing surprises me anymore. You should have known what you were getting into when you got involved with Roger. But you were blinded by the money. Now you have to live with the consequences."
Charlotte listened to her carefully. Janice really was a cold person. But that seemed to have put her in a position where no one could hurt her. "Can I have one?"
"Of course." Janice spoke gently and held out the packet of cigarettes to her. After Charlotte took one, Janice lit it for her.
Charlotte immediately started coughing. The last time she had taken a drag on a cigarette was in her youth.
"Now, Charlotte, think carefully about what I've told you. " With that, Janice stood up and left. The smell of zinc was still slightly in the air.
Charlotte was the last to enter the meeting room. The others were already here. She took a seat at the end of the table opposite her at the head, sitting Roger.
The Knight Siblings and Mia were putting on their best showmanship to pretend that they didn't know she was the silent partner.
Roger started talking about the upcoming merger. He made it clear that he wanted Janice to be the manager in the new building. She grinned slightly.
"We have one last request from Autumn. She's calling for new elections for the position of the owner," Siobhan said, placing the document in front of Roger's nose.
The older man looked sceptically at his children. But then he smiled slightly. "Gladly, if that's what you want." He gestured to his daughter.
"I vote for my Father's resignation and would like to be the new owner myself," Autumn said coldly.
Reece chimed in immediately and voted for his sister. Mia did the same.
To no one's surprise, Siobhan voted for Roger.
Now, only Charlotte and Janice had to vote.
Charlotte sighed heavily, giving Mia a look. Her eyes screamed,'I'm sorry'.
" I'm voting for Roger," she whispered.Immediately, Mia gave her a startled look. The redhead couldn't believe it.
"Bloody snake...", Autumn hissed.
Charlotte had to pull herself together, not to cry.
Roger grinned. What a wise decision from his puppet.
Janice now cleared her throat to make her voice heard. She gave Roger a gentle smile. "I think after all these years of ownership, it's time for a breath of fresh air. I vote for Autumn."
