Charlotte looked out of the window, gazing over the rooftops of London. Her leg twitched nervously, and she bit her fingernails. She had actually broken this habit, but it was all just too much for her at the moment.
"Nice of you to come," Roger's voice pulled her back. He sat down opposite her at his desk.
'It's not like I had a choice,' she thought to herself. But as an answer, she just nodded at him.
The older man cleared his throat and leant back in his office chair. "Well, it did set us back a bit that you were found out. But you haven't lost your usefulness yet."
The brunette immediately felt queasy. What else did he want from her? Didn't she gave him enough?
"There will be a change soon. The Nurseries will be merged with a third building. And I need your full support at the next board meeting."
"Isn't my vote enough? Do I have to turn up?"
That was the last thing she needed to face the people she had betrayed.
But Roger just shook his head. "No, you've been the silent partner long enough. It's time you show your face. Because of your good work, I know that my children and that annoying redhead want to vote me out. So I need everyone on my side, and this is Siobhan, you and..." The office door opened, and a woman in black walked in. "...Janice."
" Hello, Roger. " she smiled gently, but Charlotte immediately saw behind the façade. The woman's eyes spoke a different language. Deep black and piercing. There was a darkness in them.
She walked elegantly across the room and sat down next to Charlotte.
" You're just in time. Charlotte and I were just talking about the upcoming meger," Roger said.
Charlotte felt the dark eyes on her. " So this is your little informant? Well, Roger, you praised her so highly, but I have to say. I'm a little disappointed, now that I see her."
Charlotte just looked into her lap. She just wanted to get out of here. But she was caught between two predators. Roger had sunk his claws into her many years ago, but now she feared Janice would do the same. And that would tear her apart in the end.
" Don't underestimate her. Charlotte has always done a good job. Got me all the information I wanted and kept Mia and Marjorie off my back."
'You can save yourself the praise,' Charlotte thought to herself. 'You've ruined my life.'
"Really? All the information?" Janice spoke sceptically, as if she was alluding to something Charlotte wasn't aware of.
Roger's demeanour changed immediately, he leaned forward and stared directly at Charlotte. "Well, that little misstep can be forgiven."
The brunette now dared to raise her eyes. "I know I should have been more careful..."
Janice giggled softly. "Oh, she doesn't know."
"What?" Charlotte whispered.
Roger now let the cat out of the bag. "You know, Charlotte, that I only want the best for my company and my children. But that also includes Siobhan. I have to say, I was disappointed that you didn't tell me about this nurse." He looked at her dangerously.
Charlotte's heart sank, she had hoped it had gone under Roger's radar. She wanted to protect Siobhan. She could see how unhappy the blonde was. "I didn't think it was important. Vivian is just a parent." At least now she could use her talent for lying to hopefully keep Siobhan safe.
"Of course." Janice said mockingly. "Just a parent who turns up at the Nursery every Monday with two coffees. Coincidentally, whenever Siobhan updates the system."
Roger dropped his fingers on the table again and again in a rhythmic sound. "You were inattentive, Charlotte. That slipped through your fingers. But that doesn't matter now, I'll take care of it myself. But I want you to turn up at the next meeting! Do we understand each other? The last thing I want is two girls growing up without their mum! Now go! Janice and I have some things to talk about."
The threat went right through her, Roger had always used her children as leverage. Slowly, she stood up. When her eyes crossed Janice's.
Janice tilted her head slightly and scanned her from top to bottom. " I don't see what that little flirting redhead saw in you."
By now, Charlotte no longer knew that either, she had broken Mia's heart and hurt her so badly that she would most likely never trust anyone ever again.
Charlotte left the office with quick steps. She just wanted to go back to her own four walls and crawl back into bed. But as she walked down the corridor of the office building. She bumped into another person.
"Sorry..." Charlotte mumbled, looking up into Siobhan's grey eyes.
"Charlotte," she said dryly and wanted to keep walking.
But Charlotte grabbed her arm. "Siobhan, he knows about Vivian. You have to be careful!"
She immediately recognised the fear in Siobhan's face. "Why did you tell him?! Are you trying to kill me!"
" It wasn't me... Janice knew..."
More fear spread through the blonde. "Damn it..." she whispered, tearing herself away from Charlotte and walking away quickly.
The road home was silent, Charlotte didn't want to hear anything. She parked her car and entered the house.
Her children were still with her ex for a few days. Luckily, she wasn't in the right headspace to see them.
Charlotte went into the kitchen and got a bottle of wine from the cupboard. With a glass in her hand, she walked into the living room when she froze.
Sitting there in the armchair was the person she had hurt so much.
"It's time we talk!" her voice was cold and hateful.
"Mia..."
