Veracity's Backstory

When Hope was little, the family had a cat named Veracity. Hope was little and used to call her Vera because she couldn't say the entire name. She tried to help Hope with her light magic, but both the kitten and 4 year old Hope were little at the time. She couldn't turn back and forth yet...

The evacuation of Luz began because of Midnight's impending attack. Veracity managed to shift into a human when she noticed Hope wasn't there. She ran as fast as she could for someone who never walked on two feet before, but it was useless. She noticed a car and Hope got in it. She started to hurry over, but it drove away, leaving the 4 year old girl who didn't know how to shift back alone and defenseless...

Midnight sensed a magical presence and didn't destroy her. She held Veracity captive and tried to torture the information out of her of Hope's location, since Veracity could sense it. She never revealed anything. She grew up as a prisoner, unable to shift back and forth, so she just stayed human.

Eventually, Midnight left one day. Veracity managed enough energy into shifting back into a cat. She quickly escaped, able to squeeze through. No one knew she was a familiar or that she was anything other than human. They ignored the cat and she escaped.

Veracity spent the 3 years of her freedom alone and trying to survive before she 'met' Hope. And just as she suspected, Hope didn't remember her name. Vera, the white kitten, was a distant memory since she was so young...

So Veracity barely ever shifted into a cat, not wanting to remind her since she didn't remember. What would be the point? Hope would just feel guilty if she explained it and Veracity didn't want that - as much as Hope annoyed her sometimes or she still had some resentment.

Veracity was her sassy, sometimes trouble-some familiar. And she didn't plan on reminding Hope who exactly the white kitten grew up to be. So her story of struggle and being Midnight's prisoner would remain only in her mind...for now, at least.
