When Alex was young...

Alex frowned, waiting in the principal's office and staring at the floor. He closed his eyes for a moment and the car crash replayed in his mind. He jumped as the door slammed open and his eyes widened as his father walked in and sat beside him.
"Alex made a C overall this year..." the principal stated. "Since...the accident... His grades went way down."
"Alexander?" his father asked, crossing his arms.
"I-I'm sorry, dad... Mommy used to help me with my homework..." Alex frowned.
"It's your homework. My son should be able to do his homework alone," his father sighed.
Alex frowned and looked down, tearing up. "I miss mommy..."
His father frowned. "I'm sorry, Alex... But I'm a very busy man. You know that, right?"
"I know... I'll try harder..." Alex said, hugging his dad.
He smiled and hugged back.

A few years later...

Alex intensely played videogames - something he used to do with his mom. She would love this new stuff...
"Alexander Dwayne!" his father shouted, walking in. "An F on your science test?!"
His voice sounded hoarse and stressed.
Alex paused his game and turned to him. "I...tried?"
"Go study. No more videogames until you study," his father said. "You need to pick up your grades, young man."
Alex sighed. "Dad-"
"No buts. Study," he said, walking off to go to work. "I mean it!"
Alex sighed and got out his books, studying. As he read, he began to fall asleep.

"...and we'll go iceskating... Maybe even go to an arcade!" his mom stated, beaming.
Alex giggled. "Sounds fun mommy!"
"I'll go pick up some last minute things... I'll be right back," she promised. "Watch him!"
His father chuckled. "Yes ma'am."
She walked out.

Alex managed to convince his dad to play a boardgame since they were practically on vacation anyways. Suddenly, his phone rang and he answered. His father dropped the phone after a moment and he pulled Alex into a hug. His mom got into an accident.

Alex woke up and shivered. "No..."
He took a deep breath and tried to study. He tried to imagine his mom was helping him study... But it wasn't the same.
