Bandit barked quietly and Nia slowed down as she took her next steps, being alerted that there were stairs. Bandit barked again and she resumed walking. Nia loved taking walks with Bandit. The dog led her around slightly, knowing the way to go from when they walked with her parents.
"It's hot today, huh, Bandit?" Nia asked, reaching in her pocket for her sunglasses.
Even though she was blind, the bright sun hurt her eyes. Although she couldn't really see it, bright light always hurt her eyes.
With one hand holding the leash, she reached over to her bracelet and loosened it a bit. Her mother always insisted she wore an identifiable bracelet with Nia's name, her parents' numbers, and their address in case she got lost. She smiled and shook her head. So paranoid... After all, Nia did have Bandit.Nia and Bandit continued walking when suddenly Nia heard someone - a girl, she assumed - humming. Bandit immediately started walking towards the sound a bit faster and Nia stumbled slightly for a moment before following him. Bandit finally stopped and so did Nia.
The humming stopped and someone stood up. "Hi! I'm Rylee."
Rylee smiled, even though Nia couldn't see it. Bandit walked close and sat next to her, wagging his tail.
"Hi, sorry about my guide dog. You can pet him if you want. His name is Bandit."
Rylee smiled. "He seems like a very sweet dog."
She petted his head gently for a moment before leaving him alone, hearing that she's not supposed to touch guide dogs before.
"Bandit really is," Nia agreed, smiling and reaching for his head.
Bandit walked to her hand and she petted him.
"So, what are you doing in the park?" Nia asked.
"Well, I was just doing some homework. Do you go to school around here?" Rylee asked.
"Well, actually, I'm privately tutored. My mom doesn't think a blind person could handle public school... But I know I can."
"I know you can too," Rylee agreed with a smile. "I hope you'll be in my school sometime soon."
"Me too," Nia smiled. "Well, I better start the walk back before my mom freaks out and sends out a search party. Nice meeting you, Rylee."
"You too!" Rylee said.
Bandit wagged his tail in agreement before Nia gave him the command for home and they began walking back. Rylee smiled and watched them walk off. She admired her so much...And little did either of them know, her dad finally convinced Nia's mom. Nia would be enrolled as of tomorrow, which would be a very pleasant surprise for her.
