Chapter 7-Karson the Nanny

Rory woke up, forgetting that she had been in a car wreck, and stretched. Ouch! She was sore in her ribs and stomach. Must be where the airbag deployed. Thankful for her mother removing the trundle and replacing it with a queen after Rory and Billy got married. She lay on the bed, not wanting to open her eyes just yet, thinking of all she needed to do. After a few minutes, she opened her eyes and grabbed her phone to see the time. 9:45. 2 missed calls, 1 voice mail, and several text messages. She sat up, grabbed her robe, heading to the bathroom, stopping by the coffee pot on the way.

After the bathroom, she grabbed a cup of coffee and sat down at the table to enjoy the peace and quiet. Looking again at her phone, 2 missed calls and a voice mail from Billy, guess he heard she had been in a wreck or maybe just checking on the boys. I can call him later. A text from her mom saying boys are with Luke and Lane at the diner and she was at the Dragonfly, call when she wakes. A text from Logan telling her to call when she can.

She calls Logan. They talk for a while. She tells him she has several phone calls to make and then she needs to get the boys and head home. He asked if she thought that was a good idea. Two little boys all by herself and her wrist still in a brace. She laughs, telling him one of the calls will be to Karson, the boy's part-time nanny, and to her family doctor to follow up on her wrist.

After hanging up with Logan, she calls and makes an appointment Monday with her Doctor. She then calls Karson, asking her if she can come back early and help with the boys. She agrees. Rory told her to bring the Escalade to Stars Hollow around 2:00. She gives her a list of things to pick up at the grocery store. Rory had already stocked the pantry with anticipation of the boys' return, but she needed some things for herself now that she was going to be down a hand for several days.

Rory got dressed and headed to Luke's. She watched from the sidewalk as the boys helped Luke clean the table. Entering the diner, Rory was hit with a whirlwind of boys, hugging her legs and asking questions about her wrist. She sat at the table with the boys and told them she had been in a wreck, but she was okay. She told them that Ms. Karson would be in Stars Hollow this afternoon to take them home.

After eating and visiting with Lane for a while, Rory and the boys headed to the DragonFly. If they took the backway, it wouldn't take them very long walking. They walked and talked about all they did in Florida with their dad, aunt, and cousins. Rory laughed at them trying to overtalk each other. They made it to the Inn. The boys rushed in the back door looking for Skokie. When she reached the back door, her mom, Sookie, and the boys were all hugging.

"Rory, you should have called. I would have picked you up." Lorelai said. Rory replied, "It's okay, it did not hurt us to walk." Lorelai and Rory grabbed a cup of coffee before heading to the dining room to talk. Rory told her about calling Karson. Lorelai protested saying they could stay with her and Luke, but Rory told her they needed to get home and try to get into some kind of routine before school starts. Sookie and the boys were making cookies while Lorelai and Rory talked. Lorelai asked about Logan and her plans. She told her she didn't know right now, there are still logistics to work out.

After a while, Rory gathered the boys and headed to the crap shack to wait on Karson. While they waited, Rory let the boys call Billy. Sending the boys to play in the other room, Rory got on the phone with Billy.

Billy' "what happened? Chris said you had a wreck." "Yeah, semi cut me off right after the Stamford exit. I'm okay, just a little sore. My wrist is in a brace, but it's fine." "Will said you were by yourself. I'm glad the boys weren't with you. What about the SUV? Is it totaled? If it is, let Luke help you find another one. I want you and the boys in a safe vehicle." "Yeah, I got a call from the insurance company and the tow company. I've got to get my things out of the car, my sunglasses, the boys' car seats, and such." Okay, well call me if you need anything. I'll try to call the boys Thursday night." "Okay, that's fine. We should be at home, so call the home phone." Okay, bye, tell the boys I love them and tell Luke and Lorelai I said hello '''' Will do, bye".

Karson showed up on time in Stars Hollow. The boys are glad to see her. Rory talked with the insurance company and the towing company. The towing company is dropping the items left in the SUV in Hartford at Rory's house tomorrow.

When Rory moved into the Gilmore manor in Hartford, part of the remodel and children-friendly projects was a gate. Rory knows people looked at her house and wondered about her, But Rory's concern was and always will be her children. The gate made it safer for the boys to be outside without having to worry about someone coming in the driveway. Karson opened the gate and the garage with the remote in the car. Rory was glad to be home with the boys. She had missed having her little brood all under one roof.

Karson helped get the boys settled, clothes unpacked, and laundry started. Rory helped best she could. She got a Shepherd's pie out of the freezer and put it in the oven. Mrs. Lewis, an older woman, works 4 days a week. She prepared meals to freeze as well as helped Rory and Karson keep the house clean. Rory opened a can of peas and put them on the stove. Karson entered the kitchen right behind the boys. Karson got the plates and silverware down, giving it to the boys to set the table. While they ate, the boys told Rory and Karson all about Florida and the adventures with the cousins. Karson told them about her trip to Spain, how much fun she had, and she got college credit for it too. Karson is in her 2nd year at the University of Hartford. She lives with Rory and the boys. Rory transformed the basement into a media/playroom with a small studio apartment that Karson used. She usually ate with the family, but sometimes she just needed time to herself to study. Up until this summer, the boys were enrolled in daycare/preschool 3 days a week. Rory worked from home/pool house but having the boys underfoot all the time was too much of a distraction.

After everyone's settled and in bed, Rory called Logan. They had been texting off and on all day. She told Karson she was seeing someone and that she would introduce him to her later, but not to be surprised if she saw a strange car.

Logan "hey, you tired?" Rory, "Yeah, but it feels good to be at home. What are you doing"? "Still in the office, waiting for you to call. I have plenty of work to do here. Wasn't a need to go home."

Rory "Well, if you get finished before midnight, come by. We can sit on the patio by the pool and drink some wine" Logan "that sounds heavenly, be there in 20 minutes."

Rory gave him the gate combination and told him the door is unlocked, just come to the patio. "I've got the chilled wine and two glasses.
