Chapter 119 Home once again
The family arrived in Hartford Tuesday evening. Everyone was glad to be back home. The weather was a little gloomy. The family was tired. The boys were in the basement watching a movie with Karson and Ricky. Logan and Rory were cuddled up on the couch. The TV was on, but they were both lost in their own heads, so much so that when Evelyn approached them, they did not hear.
When she finally got their attention she asked to talk with them. Oh, of course, Logan and Rory will talk with her. Rory was worried that with all the problems they were having, that Evelyn wanted to quit. "I would like to talk with you about something." Evelyn began. "Logan, I'm not sure if you are aware, but when my husband died, I moved into an apartment. It is not very big. Well, my lease is up at the end of August. I talked with the landlord. He has a list of people that are waiting to get in. He brought me the new contract to sign." Logan noticed she had the contract in her hand. "Would you like for me to look at it or have Collin, Christopher, or Josh? Wow, we have plenty of lawyers in the family." Logan said and laughed. She handed him the contract. While Logan was reading over it, Evelyn continued. "As you can see, the apartments are being turned into condominiums. If I sign this contract, they will sell me condominiums. If I could afford to buy a condominium, I would not be able to afford the HOA fees. They are estimated at over $500 a year." "Yeah, I see that. You will also have to be out of your apartment for 3 months while it is being renovated to condominiums." Logan said. "Yes, I will also have to pay for storage and a place to live for 3 months." Evenly said. "Storage and a place to live will not be a problem," Rory said. You can stay here while they renovate." Evelyn smiled. "I talked with my daughter. I can afford the condominium and the HOA fees, but if anything happened to my car or myself, I would not have any money left in savings. I'm not old. But I am not young. The money my husband left me and the money from the sale of the house is in a money market account. It is for my retirement." Evelyn said.
Rory looked at Logan. He was still reading the contract. "Logan, can I talk with you in the office?" Logan looked up. "Yeah" "Evelyn, if you don't mind, We will be right back, stay here," Rory said.
When they got in the office, before Rory said anything, Logan started "I think we should just buy her the condominium. That would be one less expense she will have." Rory smiled at him. "That is a good idea, but I have a better one." Logan raised his eyebrow. "She can come live with us," Rory said. Logan looked at her. "I don't have a problem with that, but she might," Logan said. "Don't you think she would like some privacy sometimes?" Logan asked. "We can move her to the pool house, but then what would we do with Ricky? I know, we can Renovate the room above the garage. It is being used for storage. I wouldn't take much to make it an apartment for her." Rory said. She was excited now. "Hey calm down" We will have to approach this gently. She is proud." Logan said. "Okay, let's go ask her," Rory said and jumped up only to sit back down. Logan looked at her. "Want to try that again?" Logan helped Rory up.
When they talked with Evelyn, Rory was so excited. She just had to show Evelyn the room. When they got there, she told Evelyn if this was too small, she could move into the pool house and Ricky could move up here. Logan and Evelyn just laughed at her. "Logan, I know what Rory thinks, What do you think?" Evelyn asked. "I think this is a great idea. This will solve so many problems." Logan said. "Let me think about it. I will let you know this week. Is that okay, I don't want to sound ungrateful, I think it is a wonderful idea and it will solve a lot of my problems, but I still want to process it all before I give you an answer." Both Rory and Logan nodded. "Evelyn, my memory is a little fussy, but didn't you have a room at our house when I was younger," Logan asked. "I did. When I was first hired. I was engaged. Sheila was your nanny. She was my cousin. After my husband proposed, he got a job in Hartford. We are both from Georgia. Back then it would have been wrong for us to live together before we were married. I couldn't stand the thought of him being in Hartford and me in Georgia. It was going to be a year before we had the money to buy a house. Jimmy, that was my husband, was living with his father and stepmother until we could get married. I came to visit one weekend. It took all my savings for the bus ride. Sheila met me at the bus stop. She told me that the family that she worked for was looking for a maid. Sheila took me to talk with Mrs. Catherin, your grandmother. She agreed to give me a job and she allowed me to live in one of the rooms downstairs until I got married." "I think I remember that. I couldn't have been 4 or 5 years old." Logan said. "Yes, and you were a handful." Evelyn laughed. She stood up, Let me think this over. I have no one. I have a few nieces and a nephew, but Jimmy and I were never blessed with any children." Evelyn said. "I will see you tomorrow and I should have an answer for you then" She walked back in the kitchen to get her things to leave.
