After the holiday season was over, Mallory Shepherd and Alex Karev couldn't help but act slightly awkward around one another. They both knew their feelings for each other but didn't know how the other felt about them. It created an odd tension within the apartment.
Alex woke up on the living room couch with a pounding headache, feeling the repercussions of the night prior. He sat up on the couch and was surprised to see that Mallory was already awake in the kitchen.
"What's got you up this early?" he asked as he got up from the couch and grabbed a cup of coffee. "You should feel like death, I feel like death."
"I'm just better at drinking than you are, what can I say?" she answered with a smirk. "Did you get to talk to your family for Christmas?"
"Yeah, I called at some point," Alex spoke softly, trying to change the subject. "If I'm being honest, I'm glad the holidays are over. Who knew there could be so many activities?"
Before Mallory had a chance to respond, the door to the apartment burst open to reveal George O'Malley. He panted heavily, his hair stuck up in all different directions, and the ends of his pants were torn up.
Her eyes went wide as she rushed over to him. "Jesus, George, what happened? Did you get attacked by an animal or something?"
"Dude, you look like you got run over by a car."
"Meredith decided to get a dog," George snapped loudly, seeming stressed beyond words. "Did she ask me how I felt about a dog? No, not once."
"It's a dog," Alex repeated, not understanding why he was freaking out. "Haven't you had one before?"
"It doesn't matter, I don't like this one!" he exclaimed, pacing back and forth in the living room. "All it does is chew up my clothes and bark all night long. We might as well have gotten a baby, at least they're quiet some of the time."
Mallory chuckled to herself as she tried to calm him down. "Okay, I think you're just tired. It can't be that bad. And trust me, a baby is worse than a dog. Any day of the week."
George narrowed his eyes in her direction, grabbing a cup of coffee as he managed to breathe out. "You have no idea. You haven't been there."
The Shepherd woman took the spot next to Alex on the couch and their hands touched ever so slightly. Both of their eyes went wide and they quickly moved an inch over, both of their faces getting red.
Across the living room, their friend chuckled to himself. "You know, you could always kiss and get it over with."
