It was early in the morning when Mallory Shepherd and Alex Karev woke up, having become used to their early-morning routine as parents. Mallory sat at the table, feeding Carter his bottle while Alex brewed them coffee.
The skin is the largest organ in the body.
It protects us.
Ever since Mallory had become pregnant with Carter, the topic of her and Alex's wedding had gone radio silent. And even though it had been months since she had him, the topic still had yet to be brought back up.
"You know, we've been engaged for a while now," Mallory spoke up from the table. "Carter's already 4 months old. Sylvia just mentioned something, which means Holly is bound to start bombarding me soon."
"Well, it's not like they don't understand," Alex pointed out. "We had Carter; he kind of put a halt to those plans."
"But now that we have him, it just makes planning things difficult," Mallory replied with a sigh. "I'd rather save our money for his and our futures, not waste it all on one day. Especially now that we have him."
"We could always have a small wedding," Alex suggested as if it were simple. "We don't need to do anything big or extravagant."
It holds us together. Literally lets us know how we're feeling.
Mallory shrugged her shoulders as she admitted. "Honestly, I've wondered if we should just skip the whole mess and elope. It'd be a lot easier."
"But is that what you want?" Alex made sure to question. "You've always been the one who's talked about having a big wedding with all of our friends and family."
"I know, I know," Mallory responded by letting out a deep breath. "And everyone on my side expects a big wedding, but it's just a lot of work."
"I'm sure that Holly would take over the planning process," Alex reminded her, but could tell that it didn't solve her worries. "But if you want a small wedding, no wedding, whatever, I'm okay with it. Whatever you want."
"But what do you want?" Mallory stressed to him. "How do you feel about all of this?"
For a moment, Alex seemed to think about the idea. However, his answer remained the same. "I mean, for a big wedding, it'd be easier to wait until Carter's older. But if you wanted to get married tomorrow, I'd be on board. It's your choice."
