Before we were doctors, we were med students, which meant we spent a lot of time studying chemistry.
Organic chemistry, biochemistry, we learned it all.
But when you're talking about human chemistry, only one thing matters: either you've got it or you don't.
After Alex Karev went off to bed, Mallory Shepherd and Lexie Grey still sat up in the living room of the apartment. They weren't drinking anymore, but still sat up with a movie playing on the television while they talked.
"You know, it's weird how Meredith hates me but Derek, who's her boyfriend and your brother, seems to like me just fine," Lexie rambled. "It's weird, right? And she absolutely hates that he likes me."
"Derek and Meredith are two very different people," Mallory stressed to her friend. "Meredith hates family, while Derek grew up with five sisters, he has no other choice but to embrace it with open arms."
"And he doesn't know about you and Alex?" Lexie questioned next with a shake of her head. "How could he possibly not know? Anyone with eyes can tell that you and Alex are madly in love with each other."
Mallory laughed while she shrugged her shoulders. "Yeah, but Derek doesn't pay attention to things like that. Really, I should've told him from the beginning, taken his objections like an adult, but I don't know. I just didn't want to listen to what he had to say."
"I know how that can be," Lexie added with a sigh. "When I transferred to Seattle Grace, Molly told me that I was crazy and Meredith would never want anything to do with me."
"She'll come around eventually, Lex," Mallory insisted. "She has to."
"Does she, though?" Lexie questioned back in response before she shook her head and changed the subject. "Enough about me and Meredith. I want to hear more about you and Alex. How did that start?"
The Shepherd woman leaned back on the couch as she started to explain. "Well, it started when we were interns..."
Early the next morning, Alex woke up and was surprised to find that Mallory wasn't in bed next to him. He walked out into the living room and found Mallory asleep on the couch with Lexie asleep on the floor next to her.
He shook Mallory awake, and once she opened her eyes, he asked. "Why is Lexie still here? I thought you said you got her a cab last night—"
"What time is it?" Mallory asked as she grabbed the clock on the table, and her eyes went wide. "Whoa, it's early."
