The next morning, Mallory Shepherd was walking around the hospital, eager to see one of her close friends. When she found Callie Torres, she pulled her straight into one of the supply closets, anxious to fill her in on the updates in her life.

I am a rock. I am an island. That's the mantra to pretty much every surgeon I've ever met.

Instantly, Callie assumed something was wrong and questioned. "Is everything okay? Everything should be okay, your life has been on the up and up lately—"

"Nothing's wrong," Mallory interrupted with a chuckle. "Actually, things are doing better."

"Better?" Callie raised a brow in response. "What do you mean by that?"

"Well, I apologized to Derek last night, because well, we both know that I owed him that," Mallory explained with a shrug of her shoulders. "I never should've lied to him, it just made everything worse, you know?"

We like to think we're independent, loners, mavericks...

That all we need to do our jobs is an OR, a scalpel, and a willing body

Callie nodded slowly, seeing that things were indeed doing better for her friend. "This is big growth for you. What about you and Alex?"

"I mean, things are good," Mallory answered, even though she seemed unsure. "We've been slowly getting back to normal, you know? I just feel, I don't know. What I did was truly awful."

"Mallory, all of us made a lot of mistakes in that situation," Callie told her with a sigh, knowing how bad her friend felt. "He doesn't hold it against you."

"I know he doesn't. But I just feel like, I don't know, even with the times we've talked about it, he doesn't talk about how he feels all the way," Mallory explained, seeming bothered by it. "It's like he's holding something back, with me and with Violet."

Her brows instantly furrowed, assuming that Mallory had found a way to get Violet to tell her something. "How do you know he hasn't told Violet?"

"Because I think if he did, it would've made something improve. He wouldn't seem like he's holding something back," Mallory insisted, even though she wasn't even sure of it. "I'm starting to move on and feel better about things. I want him to move on with me."

With a shrug of her shoulders, Callie retorted. "People move on at their own speeds, you know? Don't stress yourself out about it."

"You sound just like Holly," Mallory narrowed her eyes in response. "But, maybe I'm just impatient."
