At some point during surgical residency, most interns get a sense of who they are as doctors and the kind of surgeons they're going to become. If you ask them, they'll tell you.

They're going to be General surgeons. Orthopedic surgeons. Neurosurgeons.

Distinctions that do more than describe their areas of expertise. They help define who they are.

Because outside the operating room, not only do most surgeons have no clue who they are, they're afraid to find out.

The next morning, Callie Torres walked right into Mallory and Alex's apartment. When she opened the door, Mallory Shepherd was already drinking coffee at her kitchen counter. She looked as if she was waiting for Callie to arrive.

"How was the rest of your night?" Mallory asked as she walked in. "Did you get room service for breakfast? Make sure you treat yourself."

"Yeah, yeah, I did that," Callie forced a smile for a second before complaining. "I still can't believe he basically threw me out on my ass."

"Like I said, say the word and I'll beat him up."

Callie shrugged her shoulders and let out a sigh. "It's just, I asked him like four times if he wanted to live together. And each time, he said yes! Except now he's saying that he was never ready at all, that I forced him into letting me live there."

Mallory poured her a cup of coffee, shaking her head. "What an asshole. Well, you know if you get sick of the hotel, you're always welcome here."

"Thanks, but I am not third-wheeling you and Alex," Callie chuckled as she drank her coffee. "I don't know how George managed."

"Yeah, I don't blame you."

Her friend groaned and layed her head on the kitchen counter dramatically as Alex Karev walked into the kitchen. He looked at Mallory with a puzzled expression as he asked. "What's wrong with Torres?"

"Just George being an idiot," Mallory answered briefly. "You know, it's probably just Izzie poisoning his mind."

"Yeah, maybe. But what if that's how he really feels?" Callie expressed, glancing towards Alex. "I wish I could have a nice relationship, or whatever you guys call it. But not everyone is like Alex. Not even Alex is actually like Alex."

Alex raised a brow as he added. "I don't even think I know what you said. But the spare bedroom's open, you'd be more enjoyable than George."

"No, I'm okay, I've been staying at the Archfield—"
