A surgeon's education never ends. Every patient, every symptom, every operation is a test, a chance for us to demonstrate how much we know, and how much more we have to learn.
The next morning, Mallory Shepherd returned to Seattle. She went to Meredith Grey's house, where everyone else was. She found everyone at the kitchen table, studying for their upcoming intern exam.
"Surprise!" Mallory announced as she walked in. "I'm back, just in time."
Alex turned around with a smile as he said. "You're back. How was Los Angeles? You enjoy seeing everyone?"
"It was amazing. I didn't realize it, but that was exactly what I needed," Mallory told him as she noticed Cristina staring at Izzie. "What are they doing?"
"Studying."
Cristina narrowed her eyes at Izzie as she questioned. "How do you treat pancreatic divisum? Izzie?"
"Oh, Cristina," Izzie exclaimed, lifting her head out of her hands as she snapped. "If you're not gonna let us get sleep, you at least have to let me put coffee in my cup first."
"Okay, so go," Cristina gestured to the coffee pot. "No one's stopping you."
Izzie sighed as she laid her head on the table. "I'm too tired to go."
Mallory chuckled as she sat down, answering. "Dorsal duct sphincterotomy. I told you, Los Angeles wouldn't keep me from studying."
"Not your turn, but correct," Cristina nodded as she reached forward and passed the question cards to Alex. "Evil Spawn, it's my turn."
"I can't believe O'Malley's missing this," Alex added with a shake of his head. "How's he gonna be ready?"
"Oh, you're kidding, right?" Cristina questioned back, her brow raised. "We have Callie's cards, but—"
"George has Callie."
Just then, Mallory started looking around, noticing that George O'Malley wasn't the only intern who was missing. "Uh, where's Meredith?"
"Oh my God, that's right, you've been gone," Izzie's eyes went wide as she leaned forward, explaining in a whisper. "Susan was admitted to the hospital and passed away from complications from the hiccups."
"What? Oh my God," Mallory put her hand over her mouth, before she narrowed her eyes at Alex. "You never told me about that."
"I didn't wanna depress you while you were down there," Alex shrugged his shoulders in response. "What's the most frequent cause of diarrhea in hospitalized patients?"
