The next morning, Lexie Grey tiptoed past the conference room where Richard Webber was having a meeting with all of the attendings, discussing which resident would be getting the solo surgery. She tried her best to eavesdrop, attempting to read Richard's lips from the window. Once she got the hint of a name, she rushed back to the other interns and residents.

My mother called it the greatest and most terrifying moment in her life.

When Lexie got back to them, she was panting while she said. "He said Karev."

Standing at the head of the surgical table, knowing that a patient's life depends on you and you alone...

Alex Karev pumped his fist with a wide smile as he exclaimed. "Yes!"

Beside him, Cristina Yang looked offended by her suggestion that he was the one they were going to choose. "Are you sure?"

"Yes."

"Well, go back there and wait until he says my name," Mallory Shepherd insisted with a grin. "I need some good news, Lexie. At least give me false hope."

It's what we all dream about. Because the first person who gets to fly solo in the OR?

Kind of a badass.

Lexie only put her hands on her hips in response, taking Graciella with her as she went to spy on Richard and the others once again. This time, she sent Graciella to report back to the residents about what she had seen.

"Stevens!" Graciella shouted, her hands on her knees as she attempted to catch her breath. "He said Stevens."

"Well, which is it, moron?" Alex scoffed in reply. "Stevens or Karev?"

"This is stupid," Cristina added with a shake of her head. "You guys are gonna trust these imbeciles to tell you who's getting the solo surgery?"

"She makes a good point," Mallory agreed, shrugging her shoulders. "They were just cutting each other open less than a week ago."

Izzie Stevens was beaming with pride as she retorted. "Is this hard for you, being banned from the solo surgery? It must be really hard for you."

"He may change his mind," Meredith was quick to suggest. "He's been known to change his mind."

This time, Steve came running back into the room. He looked unsure as he exclaimed. "Grey! Uh, the Chief said Grey."

"Well then," Mallory chuckled to herself. "They just keep getting less and less trustworthy."
