The next morning, Alex Karev stood at one of the nurse's stations, filling out charts before he went on rounds, when a woman approached him. She had brunette hair and kept glancing down the different hallways, as if she were expecting somebody.
Paranoia...
It gives you an edge in the OR.
"Hey, you look decently important around here," the woman said as she approached him. "Are you a surgeon, or—"
"Yeah, actually," Alex interrupted with a nod. "Are you lost or something?"
"Sort of, but it's fine," she dismissed the thought with a shrug. "What do you specialize in, or are you still a resident?"
"Resident," Alex answered as he held out his hand to introduce himself. "Better introduce myself, I'm Doctor Karev, a surgical resident. I wanted to specialize in plastics at first, but it looks like pediatrics is winning me over."
Surgeons play out worst-case scenarios in their heads.
With a wide smile, the woman replied. "God, that is amazing. Helping the kids who are going to change our world, it's deep. I'm a pediatric endocrinologist myself."
"I guess, yeah," Alex replied as he noticed her focusing on the faces of different doctors, as if she were trying to find someone she recognized. "Is there something that you're looking for? 'Cause I bet I could point you in the right direction."
"Do you know where I could find Derek or Mallory Shepherd?" she questioned, admitting defeat that she wouldn't find them on her own. "They don't know I'm here. It's kind of a surprise."
Alex focused his full attention on the woman once she mentioned that she knew both Mallory and Derek. And once she said that, he realized that she did look familiar, but he couldn't remember which photos he had seen her in.
"You're looking for Mal?"
"Ooh, Mal, isn't she a popular one?" the woman chuckled before she asked. "Are you one of her friends?"
"Fiance, but you were close," Alex answered, which made the woman's eyes go wide. "If I had to guess, Mallory is probably running around here with Mark somewhere. But, it's hard to tell; it can be hard to find her on a good day."
