In the OR, time loses all meaning.
In the midst of sutures and saving lives, the clock ceases to matter. 15 minutes. 15 hours. Inside the OR, the best surgeons make time fly.
Outside the OR however, time takes pleasure in kicking our asses. For even the strongest of us, it seems to play tricks. Slowing down, hovering, until it freezes, leaving us stuck in a moment, unable to move in one direction or the other.
At the bar, Mallory Shepherd ordered another drink as she chatted with one of the other doctors whom she didn't know. Beside her, Alex Karev walked up, not even glancing her way as he ordered another drink with the bartender.
"Who even drinks beer anymore?" Mallory asked with raised brows as she eyed his drink. "Isn't it just a tad bit boring?"
His brows furrowed as he questioned back. "Who are you again?"
"Mallory Shepherd, but don't feel bad, I can't say I'm any better," she insisted with a shrug of her shoulders. "I've been drinking tequila shots all night long."
"Ah, so you must be the type that rambles when they drink too much," Alex noted with a nod as Mallory almost threw up after her shot of tequila. "Or the type who doesn't know how to take a shot. That was gross."
Mallory narrowed her eyes in response as she scoffed. "I can take a shot, I'm just not a fan of tequila."
"I'm not either," he replied while he sat down on the bar stool next to her. "I've always been more of a whiskey guy."
"Not terrible, but, hey," she whipped around to face me. "You never told me your name. So now you owe me two questions. Your name and where you're from."
"Fine, I'm from Iowa, which is, uh, different than here, that's for sure," Alex told her with a shrug, sipping his beer casually. "You?"
The Shepherd woman paused, thinking about her answer for a moment before she answered with a chuckle. "I like to think I'm from a lot of places. But New York is where I was born. It's weird being on the other side of the country."
