In the middle of the night, Mallory Shepherd woke up to the sound of crying. But when she glanced at the time, she saw it was only three in the morning. She let out a groan as she began shaking her fiancé awake.

Surgeons aren't complacent people.

"Alex," Mallory whispered as she shook him. "Alex."

Instantly, Alex sat up fully in the bed, thinking something was wrong. He rubbed his eyes as he opened them, but then he realized why he was being woken up, and he too let out a loud groan before he laid back down.

"Damn it," Alex cursed to himself before he questioned. "Wasn't he just up two hours ago?"

"Yeah, and we put him to bed five hours before that," Mallory concluded with a shake of her head. "I think our baby hates us."

"He doesn't hate us," Alex was quick to insist. "He's just, well, a baby. I guess crying is what they're best at."

Mallory narrowed her eyes in response before she placed the pillow over her face, just to muffle the sound for ten seconds, just to enjoy the sound of semi-silence. But still, her baby's cries echoed through the apartment.

"Come on," Alex nudged her as he spoke up. "It's your turn."

"What?" Mallory's eyes went wide in response. "Why is it always my turn?"

"Because I was the one who went last time," Alex reminded her with a chuckle, placing a kiss on her cheek. "Don't worry, that just means next time it'll be my turn."

When Carter Karev woke up again at 5 in the morning with the same cries from two hours before, Mallory was quick to wake up, smacking her fiancé's arm as she woke him. "Come on, you know whose turn it is this time."

"What was that, two hours?" Alex let out a groan as he rubbed his eyes. "We have to wake up in another two hours. Couldn't he have waited for then?"

We don't put our feet up. We don't sit still.

"You know he loves to eat at 5 a.m.," Mallory replied with a shrug of her shoulders. "I washed the bottle the last time I was up."

Alex glanced down at his fiancée with a smile as he concluded. "That's what makes this easier, us being a team."
