The number one rule of surgery is to limit exposure.

Since Mallory Shepherd's maternity leave had started, she had become miserable. She hated sitting by herself in the apartment for the long hours that Alex Karev worked. And what made it worse was that all of her friends in Seattle were surgeons as well, leaving no one with time to visit.

It was a random morning when Mallory insisted on going into work with Alex, even if she wasn't going to be doing any work at all. After forcing him to let her in the car with the threat of walking, Alex obliged by letting her come along.

As they walked into the hospital, Alex made sure to voice his frustrations. "This isn't how maternity leave works, Mal. You're supposed to stay at home—"

"Bailey is performing a hot chemo lavage," Mallory interrupted with a shake of her head. "Do you know how rare that is to witness?"

"Come on," Alex groaned in response. "Of course, I do."

"I'm going to be sitting in a chair in the gallery," Mallory began to insist. "I'll be off my feet, doing absolutely nothing. It's no different than me sitting on the couch watching TV, which is what I'd be doing if I were at home."

Alex narrowed his eyes as he repeated her request. "You're just watching this one surgery?"

"Yes, I promise," Mallory was quick to reply. "Gosh, you say it like you don't trust me."

"When it comes to you hanging around the hospital when you're not supposed to, I don't," Alex countered with a raised brow. "After the surgery is over, you're going back home."

Mallory only rolled her eyes as she led the way into the crowded gallery. Everyone was there to watch Miranda Bailey's surgery, including most of their friends. Mallory was quick to take the open seats by Callie, Arizona, and Cristina.

Keep your hands clean, your incisions small, and your wounds covered.

"Wow, Alex let you out of the house?" Callie commented as Mallory sat down. "I'm surprised."

"You should be," Mallory responded with a scoff. "He tried to race me to the car just to get away. However, once he realized that we live across the street and I'd walk, he stopped."
