Surgeons usually fantasize about wild and improbable surgeries.

Someone collapses in a restaurant; we slice them open with a butter knife. Replace a valve with a hollowed-out stick of carrot. But every now and then, some other kind of fantasy slips in.

Most of our fantasies dissolve when we wake. Banished to the back of our mind.

But sometimes we're sure, if we try hard enough, we can live the dream.

Mallory Shepherd was up early the next morning, staring at the message she had received from Addison the night before. No matter how many times she called her, there was no answer, which resulted in Mallory leaving angry voicemails again and again.

"I swear to God, Addison, answer your phone!" she shouted into her phone, standing at her counter. "I don't care that you slept with Mark, I really don't, it's not like it's the first time. I just want to know what happened."

She hung up and set her phone done, taking a deep breath in before calling again. As she was on the phone, Alex Karev walked out of the bedroom, rubbing his eyes as he stared at her, confused by what she was doing.

"What are you doing screaming in the kitchen at five-thirty?" Alex exclaimed back, his eyes wide. "You're doing all of this at five-thirty?"

"I don't think you understand, Alex," Mallory insisted with a shake of her head. "Mark's back in Seattle."

"That's great," Alex replied, not understanding what she meant. "You were just talking about how much you missed him—"

Mallory held up her finger, stopping him as she continued. "No, I wasn't finished. Do you want to know how I know Mark is in Seattle?"

Alex thought about it for a second, and then his jaw dropped. "No, he didn't—"

"Yes, he slept with Addison last night!" Mallory told him, raising her voice as she explained. "Derek walked in on them, I guess. And now she's deciding not to answer any of my calls! Why tell me if you're gonna ignore me?"

She looked down at her phone as she redialed the number and put the phone to her ear. Which only made Alex mumble. "The Shepherd family drama, it never seems to end."

After a few seconds of being on the phone, Mallory stood up and grabbed her purse off the kitchen counter, putting her things in it. Then she grabbed a pair of work pants, throwing things around as she got dressed.
