The next morning, Mallory Shepherd paced around the apartment as she called Derek Shepherd for the tenth time. She assumed that after five calls, he would have answered, but even with voicemail after voicemail, her calls were ignored.

Surgeons aren't known for being warm and cuddly.

"Come on, Derek, I see that you unblocked my number this morning. That's really mature, and I'm proud of your growth," Mallory started before her tone shifted. "You wanna know what's not mature? Not answering my phone calls!"

After she was done with her voicemail, she redialed the number and waited for the tone to hit her ears once more. The more times she called, the more upset Mallory grew. She refused to sit by as Derek went on his downspiral, one that no one was willing to mess with.

"Okay, I just need answers, okay?" Mallory said next, rubbing her forehead anxiously. "I need you to explain to me why you're willing to throw your career away over one patient? You were my inspiration for my entire life, and now you're just stopping? No, I won't accept it."

It wasn't long before Alex Karev poked his head into the kitchen where she was pacing, waking up to the sound of his fiancée yelling into the phone. With furrowed brows, he questioned. "What's going on? Why are you yelling?"

They're arrogant, impatient, and mean as often as not.

"Derek won't answer my calls," Mallory told him with a huff. "He unblocked my number, but he won't answer my calls."

"I don't know, Mal," Alex shrugged his shoulders in response. "Maybe he wants to be left alone."

"I, I can't. I can't leave him alone when I know he's struggling," Mallory stressed with a sigh. "I know the weight of those feelings hitting you at once. Maybe I can help."

Alex didn't look amused by her suggestion. Instead, he shook his head as he countered. "It's not your job to help him. That's Mer's job as his girlfriend—"

"Yeah, and she tried," Mallory interrupted with a roll of her eyes. "Then he hit our family ring into the woods. This is not okay! Those are not the signs of a man who needs to be left alone."

"I—" Alex went to object, but instead, he sighed. "There's not gonna be any convincing you otherwise, is there?"

"No, there isn't," Mallory confirmed with a nod. "This is something I have to do. I have to."
