In the practice of medicine, change is inevitable. New surgical techniques are created, procedures are updated, and levels of expertise increase.

Innovation is everything. Nothing remains the same for long. We either adapt to change...

Or we get left behind.

Seventeen days before they started their residency, Mallory Shepherd and Alex Karev were alone at their apartment. They savored the free time they had been given by watching a movie on the couch. But as they watched, Alex kept glancing down at his girlfriend.

"Who was that guy you were talking to the other day?" Alex asked as he grabbed more popcorn from the bucket. "He seemed important."

"Oh," Mallory's face fell. "You saw that?"

"Yeah," Alex's brows furrowed as he noticed how tense she became. "Why?"

"Nothing, nothing, it's just—"

Alex started shaking his head, thinking that he understood, and he continued with a follow-up question. "Is he an ex? I get it, Mal, you're hot, you've got to have some ex-boyfriends somewhere—"

"Gross, no, he is not my ex-boyfriend," Mallory denied as she let out a deep breath. "That's Louis, one of my closest friends from New York. And the only one to know where I went."

"What do you mean?"

She got up from her spot on the couch, pacing around the room as she explained. "Okay, when I left New York, after what happened with Griffin— It was hard, okay? It was hard to tell anyone that I needed to leave, that I needed to get out. The easiest one to talk to was Louis."

"So," he nodded along, processing what she had told him. "You fled?"

"It wasn't like that, I just wanted to be free," Mallory insisted. "But once I regretted it, it was too late, and I couldn't find a way to reach out. So, that's that."

"That's that?"

Mallory shrugged her shoulders, not knowing what else to say. "Yeah, but now Louis is here. So that ruins my plan of ignoring my problems."

"Okay, I have a new question," Alex stopped her as he asked. "What's he doing here?"

"I guess that he and Sylvie broke up again, it's their thing," Mallory groaned loudly, rolling her eyes as she explained. "She told him that he couldn't be a surgeon. Now he's here to prove her wrong. Stupid."
