As surgeons, we live in a world of worst-case scenarios. We cut ourselves off from hoping for the best because, too many times, the best doesn't happen. But every now and then, something extraordinary occurs ...
When Alex Karev woke up the next morning, to his surprise, Mallory Shepherd was not in bed next to him. Considering how early he had woken up, it was very out of the norm, especially because she was an early riser.
He started looking around the apartment, expecting to find her somewhere getting ready for her shift at the hospital, already talking about the possible surgeries. But she wasn't anywhere inside the apartment.
"Mal?" Alex called out as he started brewing coffee. He peeked out the window, seeing her car was still in its normal spot. "Okay, your car is here, so you have to be here. That's just how it works."
For a second time, he searched the apartment again, but everything looked exactly the same. Which confirmed what he had suspected, Mallory had walked somewhere and didn't tell him where she went.
"What the hell?"
Next, he picked up his phone and started to call Callie Torres. Figuring that as one of her best friends, she would be the only one with some sort of answer to any of it. When Callie answered, Alex could hear her rustling around, as if he had just woken her up.
"Why the hell are you calling me? At 6 in the morning?" Callie's voice rose as she glanced at the time. "No, let me rephrase, what the hell is wrong with you?"
"Jeez, don't get pissed," Alex responded quickly. "Is Mallory with you or have you heard from her?"
"Uh, no, listen, I know you and I'm pretty sure you're freaking out over nothing," Callie sighed as she asked. "Have you even called her?"
Alex stopped, realizing that calling her hadn't even crossed his mind before he went straight to panicking. He sighed as he replied. "Well, no—"
"Okay, well, you start there and call me if there's a real issue," Callie stated, and he could hear her going right back to sleep. "Goodbye."
He rolled his eyes and called Mallory Shepherd next. And surprisingly, she answered on the second ring. In her background, he could hear wind through the line. He quickly questioned. "Uh, where the hell are you?"
"Hey, what kind of question is that?" Mallory asked back. "Maybe I went out for some morning coffee."
"That would be a believable story if you ever did that," Alex instantly retorted before asking again. "Where are you really?"
