The best gift I ever got was for Christmas when I was ten. My very first suture kit.

I used it until my fingers bled, and then I tried to use it to stitch up my fingers.

It put me on the path to becoming a surgeon.

My point is, sometimes the best gifts come in really surprising packages.

The morning of their shift at the hospital, Mallory Shepherd and Alex Karev stood together at one of the nurses' stations. As her pregnancy progressed, Alex couldn't help but become more and more concerned about her workload.

"You know, you only have like four months left in your pregnancy," Alex brought up the subject again, making his fiancée narrow her eyes. "I know I've said it a million times—"

"You have," Mallory interrupted to confirm. "I don't know why we need to have this conversation again."

"Because it's a conversation that we need to have, Mallory," Alex attempted to declare. "I mean, you're over halfway through. Even Bailey started taking it easier when she was over halfway through her pregnancy."

Instantly, Mallory crossed her arms against her chest as she grew defensive. "What's the worst that could happen?"

With a raised brow, Alex retorted. "That you could add stress to the baby, which I know you know could induce early labor. Besides, it's not good to be on your feet this many hours of the day. You're chasing after every surgery that you can—"

"Yeah, because I will be on maternity leave before I know it," Mallory continued to insist. "Your paternity leave is less than half of mine. Do you realize how behind I'll be?"

"You won't be behind," Alex tried to dismiss her concerns. "You're one of the best residents in our class, and it's natural—"

"Now you're just trying to sweet-talk me," Mallory concluded with her eyes glared. "We can talk about this later, at home—"

Alex only narrowed his eyes as he replied. "Yeah, you've used that excuse every night this week."

Across the lobby, they noticed a young woman with bright blonde hair walk through the doors, glancing around at the hospital with wide eyes. She walked over to Mallory and Alex, who stood behind the counter, putting a pause to their conversation.
