Early in the morning, Mallory Shepherd was in the supply closet of the hospital. She stepped away from the others who were asleep in Izzie Stevens's room. She was on the phone with her sister Nancy, who could tell by the tone of her voice when she answered the phone that something was different.
"Come out with it, Mallory," Nancy insisted over the phone. "You already explained the stipulations of the matter; I can't tell anyone, specifically Derek and Kathleen."
"Are you sure?" Mallory was quick to retort. "I don't think you understand how important that part is, Nancy."
"You're already engaged. What more could there be?" Nancy pointed out with a laugh. "It's not like you're pregnant."
"Well—"
Nancy went silent on the other line, realizing that she was. Beside her, Lizzie Shepherd sat in the passenger seat of her car, listening to the call on speakerphone, unbeknownst to Mallory. With one motion, Lizzie kept quiet, making sure not to make any noise.
"Mallory Claire Shepherd," Nancy spoke slowly once her youngest sister wouldn't respond. "Are you telling me what I think you're telling me?"
"Surprise, you're gonna be an aunt again. Except this time, this one should be your favorite because it's from me," Mallory revealed with a chuckle. "But, I don't know, I wanna take my time telling everyone. You know what happened last time."
"Um, yes, yes, I do," Nancy nodded, not saying a word on the subject as she turned the conversation. "What about Alex? Does he know?"
"Yeah, he knows," Mallory replied, letting out a deep breath she was holding back. "We're, we're excited? I don't know. This is all just a lot when you start to think about it."
All Nancy could do was sigh as she insisted. "You have the whole supporting you, Mal. Besides, you have three sisters who have been down this road before; we have loads of tips and tricks that you would love to hear about."
"As long as it's not from Katie," Mallory added, which made Nancy laugh. "Okay, I gotta get back to work. I'll talk to you later. Yeah, love you too."
The second that Mallory was getting off her phone call, Alex Karev walked into the supply closet, looking pleased to see her. "You know, you could've hid out in one of the on-call rooms. Who was that on the phone?"
"Nancy," Mallory answered as she stretched out her arms. "I figured I should start telling my family. It's always best to start with the one who's furthest away."
