We go into medicine because we want to save lives.

We go into medicine because we want to do good.

We go into medicine for the rush, for the high, for the ride.

The next morning, Alex Karev went into the hospital early, leaving Mallory Shepherd alone at their apartment. She had Louis Carmichael, Lexie Grey, and Callie Torres over for coffee before their shift began. But no matter how hard she tried to conceal it, Mallory was more nervous than she ever had been before.

"Hey, Lou," Mallory spoke up as she stood at the stove. "I think I left my purse in my car. Could you go check, please?"

With a raised brow, Louis replied. "Why won't you check yourself?"

"Because I am finishing the muffins."

"Fine, fine," Louis raised his hands as he stood up from his spot at the table. "But you know this area, you should know better than to leave your things in the car."

"Yeah, yeah, thanks," Mallory quickly dismissed him. "I'll make sure to remember that next time."

The second that he was gone and the door was shut, Lexie narrowed her eyes across the table as she cleared her throat. "I know that this is invading your privacy, but is something wrong? You've been getting sick at work—"

"No, you make a good point. Anytime Alex talks to you, you look guiltier than anyone I've ever seen," Callie added, nodding in agreement while Mallory sighed. "What? I'm surprised that he hasn't noticed."

"No, he has," Mallory admitted. "He's noticed. He just doesn't know what it is."

"What'd you do?" Callie asked with furrowed brows. "It couldn't have been that bad."

Mallory only sighed again, running her hands through her hair as she mumbled. "It wasn't something that I did."

"Huh?"

But what we remember at the end of most days are the losses.

What we lie awake at night replaying is the pain we caused or failed to cure, the lives we ruined or failed to save

Without another word, Mallory set the positive pregnancy test down on her kitchen counter. She then looked at her friends, an expression on her face that said she had no idea what to do. Both Callie's and Lexie's jaws instantly dropped.
