It was early in the morning when Callie Torres came over to Mallory Shepherd and Alex Karev's apartment. To their surprise, she took over Carter's morning routine, letting the parents catch up on sleep. The two were more than appreciative of her help, but couldn't help but question why she was doing it.

Movies make parenthood look simple.

After a short while, Mallory joined her in the kitchen, where she was feeding Carter with a wide smile on her face. The second she noticed her best friend walked in, she instantly looked up to give her an update.

"Hey, he is changed, fed, and I even put this cute little outfit on him that Addison sent. He is all ready for daycare," Callie was quick to fill her in. "I swear, this baby has a bigger wardrobe than I do."

"Wow, you did everything," Mallory nodded along with wide eyes. "You should've considered nannying as an alternative career."

"I really should have," Callie replied, holding Carter close. "He just heals everything, you know?"

"Is everything okay with you, Callie?" Mallory questioned with a raised brow. "I mean, I am eternally grateful for all of this help that you have given us, but it seems like something's bothering you."

Callie let out a loud sigh as she countered. "You can't make me talk about it when I have Carter in my arms. He's like my shield, because if I talk about things that make me upset, it'll just make him upset."

"Come on," Mallory argued back. "You are not using my baby as a shield."

"Yes, I am," Callie continued to persist. "Because I don't wanna talk about it."

When Carter started to stir in her arms, letting out a cry, Callie only narrowed her eyes at Mallory, not discussing it any further. When Alex walked into the kitchen to join them, he didn't even notice their eyes narrowed at each other; instead, he walked straight over to Carter.

The kids never cry, they're always happy, and everything goes the way it should.

"Wow," Alex nodded slowly as he poured himself a cup of coffee. "You have him dressed, fed, and everything."

"I even burped him," Callie added before she turned back to her best friend. "And now, your fiancée is trying to take him away from me. Look how unhappy he is."

"Fine, if you don't want to talk about it with me," Mallory spoke up, taking Carter into her arms as she declared. "You can talk about it with Alex."

"What?" Alex's brows furrowed instantly. "Talk about what with Alex?"
