There comes a point in your life when you're officially an adult. Suddenly, you're old enough to vote, drink, and engage in other adult activities.

Suddenly, people expect you to be responsible, serious, and a grown-up.

We get taller. We get older. But do we ever really grow up?

The next morning at Seattle Grace, Mallory Shepherd walked up to where Meredith Grey and George O'Malley stood, waiting for the elevator. When Meredith saw her, she was surprised to see her without Alex Karev by her side.

Mallory tapped her foot anxiously as she said. "Today has felt like the longest day of my life."

"Where's Alex?" Meredith questioned, glancing around as she expected him to walk up at any moment. "I'm not used to seeing you two apart."

"I'm not sure, he's somewhere around here," Mallory shrugged her shoulders in response. "He got called in early and was gone before I woke up."

George kept his eyes on his pager, messing with it continuously before he asked. "Do you know what kind of batteries these take?"

Meredith chuckled as she answered. "Double A."

"Is it really?" George nodded slowly. "Do you have one?"

"I have some in my locker."

"Here," Mallory reached into her bag and handed George a battery before she continued to tap her foot. "You're lucky that I keep spares."

Both of them noticed how tense Mallory seemed, but were interrupted when the elevator doors opened. When they opened, Izzie Stevens and Derek Shepherd stood inside. There was an awkward silence before the doors closed again, all of them silently deciding to wait for the next one.

"Yeah, we're avoiding them," George stated with a sigh. "It's come to that."

"Speak for yourself," Mallory spoke up, chuckling as she said. "I just didn't want to ride the elevator of awkwardness."

The Grey woman turned to him with furrowed brows. "Why are you avoiding Izzie?"

"I'm actually curious about that, too," Mallory added, watching as George rolled his eyes. "Come on, you threw your marriage away for that girl. It's supposed to be your happily ever after."

He shrugged his shoulders as he sighed. "It's like we're not us anymore. Everything used to be so easy. Talking, at least, used to be easy. Now we can't even talk anymore."
