We assume the really serious changes in our lives happen slowly, over time. But it's not true. The big stuff happens in an instant.
Ask any doctor, and they can point to the one moment they became a physician. It usually isn't med school graduation day.
Whatever it is... Nobody forgets it.
Sometimes you don't even know anything's changed. You think you're still you and your life is still your life...
But you wake up one day, and you look around, and you don't recognize anything. Not anything at all.
The morning before their shift at the hospital, Mallory Shepherd and Alex Karev were up early in their apartment. Since it was Mallory's last shift at the hospital before she started maternity leave, she was more than eager to head to work, wanting to take in her last day of work.
Alex sat at the kitchen table with a book with tips on how to baby-proof a house. As he went through the different tasks that the book recommended, his eyes went wide, not even thinking of half of the things it suggested.
"I didn't even think of the outlets," Alex said with a shake of his head. "We're gonna need to get those covered."
"Alex, he's not gonna be crawling for months," Mallory insisted with a chuckle. "We have plenty of time before we need to worry about baby proofing."
"I wanna be ahead of this," Alex continued to persist. "That way, when he's at that point, we're not scrambling to get everything done."
"Well," Mallory walked over to the cabinets as she gestured. "I guess we should add those cabinet locks to the shopping list then."
With furrowed brows, Alex questioned. "Why do we have to lock the cabinets?"
"Because it's where we keep the cleaning supplies," Mallory pointed out, making her fiancé's eyes go wide. "And then there's the other cabinet where we keep the alcohol."
"Cabinet locks will be added to the list then."
Before Mallory had a chance to say anything in response, Lexie Grey barged into their apartment. She held her face in her hands, almost expecting to catch them in the middle of something as she let out a dramatic groan.
"Please tell me that I can use your shower and that you left hot water," Lexie pleaded to her friends. "And that there is no chance of seeing either one of you naked."
