In his office, Richard Webber had all six of Miranda Bailey's interns lined up, one by one, in front of him. He stood with a stern expression, waiting for one of them to confess to cutting Denny Duquette's LVAD wire.
Izzie Stevens stepped forward first as she took a deep breath. "I cut the LVAD wire, it was me—"
"Actually," Meredith took a step. "I cut the LVAD wire."
"No, I did it," George was the next to speak up. "I'm the one who cut the wire."
Meredith turned to Mallory and stared at her intently, which made Mallory glance at Alex for a second before stepping forward. Richard's frown deepened as he began. "Mallory Shepherd—"
"Fine, they're lying to you, Richard. I'm the one who cut the LVAD." Mallory told him, but her eyes remained on Izzie the entire time, narrowed in anger. They all turned to Cristina, who still hadn't spoken, and Mallory nudged her in the side and muttered. "If I'm doing it, you're doing it."
"Fine," she rolled her eyes and stepped with them. "I cut the LVAD wire."
They all turned to Alex Karev, who put his hands in the air defensively and claimed. "I didn't do anything. I'm totally innocent."
"Alex—"
"I wasn't even here. He knows that I wasn't here," Alex was quick to point out. "Do you think he doesn't know that? The guy's not mentally challenged."
"That's not the point," George shook his head. "What about loyalty?"
"Plus, you pinky-promised me that you'd at least say that you did it," Mallory added as she crossed her arms against her chest. "Even if Richard's not a complete idiot."
As the interns started arguing, the Chief of Surgery became annoyed as he exclaimed. "People! I know which one of you did this. So, you might as well come clean now. I mean it."
"With all due respect, sir," George retorted, his normal timid demeanor gone. "If you knew, you wouldn't be asking us."
"You have your suspicions," Meredith proclaimed with a nod. "But you don't actually know."
"Not for sure, anyway."
"And," Mallory concluded, glancing at the rest of them. "I know that you wouldn't do anything to any of us without proof, sir."
Mallory Shepherd had never seen the expression on Richard's face, how furious he was, but the way his eyes were drawn to Izzie, Mallory knew he had an inclination. But she stayed silent as she watched him yell.
