Throughout the next few weeks after Carter Karev had been at home, Mallory Shepherd and Alex Karev slowly got settled into their new lives as parents. However, what they were not prepared for was the true reality of having a newborn.

The newborn baby woke up numerous times throughout the night, leaving his parents to get almost no sleep. When Alex woke up the next morning to go to work, he couldn't help but lunge around the house.

Surgeons are detail-oriented.

We like statistics, and checklists, and operating procedures.

Mallory was up with him, still in the routine of getting up at the crack of dawn, like she did when she was going to work. She carried Carter in her arms while he slept, and she sat down at the table, enjoying a cup of coffee.

When Alex came out of the bathroom, dressed and ready for the day, he rubbed his eyes. He tried his best to hide his exhaustion as he joined his fiancée in the kitchen, taking their son from her arms for a moment.

"Hey, buddy," Alex greeted Carter first before he turned to his fiancée. "How many times were you up last night?"

"It felt like every two hours," Mallory answered with a groan. "I wonder if he's just crying to cry sometimes."

"I think I was up the other hour of those two hours. I'm going to be lucky if I can stay awake today," Alex replied as he glanced down at their son. "You're lucky you're worth it."

While she poured another cup of coffee, Mallory eyed her fiancé with one wish on her mind. It didn't take very long for Alex to glance her way, immediately noticing the look that she was giving him.

"What?" Alex asked as his brows furrowed. "Is there something on my face?"

"No, no," Mallory retorted, rubbing the back of her neck nervously as she began. "I just, you know, had an idea."

"An idea?" Alex was quick to repeat. "That's a little vague. What kind of idea?"

Our patients live because we enjoy following the steps.

But as much as we love to always rely on the numbers...

We also know that some of the greatest medical discoveries have happened by accident.
