The next morning, Mallory Shepherd paced around the bathroom of her apartment anxiously while she glanced up at the clock on the wall. Then, she glanced back at the pregnancy test on the counter, which she had finally taken after Callie Torres made her realize the possibility of her being pregnant.

She had Callie Torres on the phone while she ranted. "This is it. My life is over. I mean, what am I going to do? It just, this can't be happening."

Defeat isn't an option, not for surgeons.

"Would you calm down?" Callie questioned back, trying her best to be reassuring. "Are you sure that you're pregnant? What if you're just sick or something, like a cold—"

"A cold?" Mallory retorted, and Callie could hear the sarcasm in her voice. "I've been throwing up, my hormones are out of control, and you think it's a cold? After what you told me last night?"

"You know what, you're right. It sounds much worse than a cold. But it could still be a number of other things," Callie continued to insist. "How many minutes until it's ready?"

"Five," Mallory answered with a shake of her head. "I don't think I can wait that long."

Through the phone, Callie started to chuckle, trying to ease her best friend's anxiety as she questioned. "So, does Alex have any idea that you're taking the test? You know, in case I get asked about why you're acting weird. Again."

"Not yet, I haven't," Mallory was quick to reply. "I can't tell him until I know for sure."

"Are you sure that you're not just stressed?" Callie suggested next. "I mean, first, you got engaged, which is huge. And then between Addison coming into town, Derek downspiraling, and Izzie getting cancer. It's been nothing but stress."

"That's what I thought too. Especially because the last week, I've been trying to focus on coming up with ideas for the wedding," Mallory explained before she let out a deep breath. "But then I realized that I'm more than a week late, Callie. And I'm never late, ever."

"Shit," Callie cursed before her optimistic voice returned. "Look, I'm sure that it's fine. I'm sure there's a perfectly normal reason for that."

"You're not helping," Mallory stated, glancing back at the clock. "This has been the longest five minutes of my life."

We don't back away from the table till the last breath's long gone.
