When Mallory Shepherd and Alex Karev arrived at work the day that Mercy West was officially merging with Seattle Grace, there were workers in front of the hospital, hanging a new sign. Which only meant there was no turning back.
The second that they walked into the hospital, they were met with a sea of orange. The new doctors who had merged from Mercy West stood out in their bright orange scrubs, which heavily contrasted their light blue.
When you get sick, it starts out with a single bacteria.
One lone nasty intruder.
Pretty soon, the intruder duplicates. Becomes two.
Both Mallory and Alex decided to stay quiet as they got on the elevator. When they got on, there were two other male doctors, both in orange scrubs, which only emphasized that they didn't belong. Mallory eyed them both as she scrunched her nose.
As she leaned in to her fiancé, Mallory whispered. "Have I ever told you that I hate the color orange?"
"You haven't," Alex answered as he too eyed the other doctors. "But I'm starting to realize why you'd think that."
Then those two become four. And those four become eight.
Then, before your body knows it, it's under attack.
By the time they got to the residents' lounge, it was more crowded than normal with the new residents from Mercy West trying to fill the empty lockers that were left as they got a gauge of the new hospital.
Mallory stood at her cubby, which was right next to Alex's. The cubby on the other side of hers was empty, and it had stayed empty since George O'Malley passed away. Izzie Stevens was on the other side, and both she and Mallory couldn't help glancing at the cubby as they got ready.
With a sigh, Izzie commented. "It never gets any easier, does it?"
"No," Mallory responded with a sad smile. "It really doesn't."
Suddenly, one of the Mercy West residents walked up between them. She had auburn hair that was styled in a short pixie, and her eyes were narrowed as she started to toss her things into what used to be George's cubby.
"Hey," Izzie turned to the woman, trying her best to stay polite. "You can't put that in there."
"Oh," the woman's brows furrowed in response. "They told us to grab a cubby."
