The next night, Mallory Shepherd was shocked to find out that her mother had plans to come into town. Without any prior explanation or warning, her mother had taken a cruise that so happened to make a layover in Seattle.
My mother used to say this about residency. It takes a year to learn how to cut; it takes a lifetime to learn not to.
It was during the midnight hours that Mallory Shepherd and Alex Karev decided to go over to Meredith Grey's house to assist her in cleaning up the place. With Derek living there, Meredith was terrified that his and Mallory's mother would decide to stop by.
"I cannot believe that she's visiting, especially so suddenly," Mallory rambled, obviously anxious about her mother's upcoming visit. "How hard is it to make a phone call to give someone a heads up?"
"Technically, she did," Alex replied with a chuckle. "The night before."
"Still better than everyone else's surprise visits, I guess," Mallory added before she shook her head. "But still, I didn't even know that she was going on a cruise."
"What's your mom like anyway?" Alex questioned, which made his girlfriend's brows furrow. "You don't talk about her much."
Mallory shrugged her shoulders before she answered. "She's one of the most caring women that you will ever meet. We're just, we're not close like that, you know? We don't have the typical mother-daughter relationship."
"You grew up at Derek's, right?" Alex asked next, trying to get all of the details straight. "You didn't live with your mom?"
"No, actually, she didn't have custody of me," Mallory revealed with a sigh. "I don't talk about it because it's not a big deal. Derek took care of me, but I still had a relationship with her. She was the best mom she could be, given the circumstances."
"So," Alex nodded slowly. "Should I be nervous about meeting her?"
"No," Mallory replied, even though she sounded unsure. "She's probably the one person in my family that you don't have to be nervous about meeting."
Of all of the tools on a surgical tray, sound judgment is the trickiest one to master. And without it, we're all just toddlers running around with 10-blades.
When they arrived at Meredith's house, everyone was sprawled out across the living room. Izzie Stevens scrambled to get everything cleaned while George O'Malley and Sadie Harris sat with Meredith on the floor.
