The morning before their shift, Mallory Shepherd and Alex Karev were at their apartment, already up and starting their day. They sat together at the kitchen table while they had their cups of coffee, enjoying their time before they had to leave.

For a surgeon, every patient is a battlefield.

"So, I was talking to Violet yesterday," Mallory shifted their conversation with a smile. "She had me try something new."

Alex nodded slowly, focusing on stirring his coffee as he replied. "That's good that you're talking to her normally again."

"She's been having me talk about what's happened in the past, and how that shapes me. And how that shaped my feelings around everything, and I think it's working," Mallory explained, her smile widening. "Which I don't think I've ever said aloud."

"That's really good, Mal," Alex told her with a smile of his own. "I think that talking to Violet is good for you, that's the whole point of you going, you know?"

From the way he responded, Mallory could tell that he didn't want to talk about it with her, but couldn't figure out the exact reason why. So, she continued to push further. "Don't you want to talk about what you and Violet have been talking about?"

"No," Alex was quick to answer. "Not really."

"Come on, have you ever talked about whether there's a reason why you can be so cold to others?" Mallory asked, which made him raise a brow. "Remember when we were interns? You were an ass to pretty much everyone except me."

"I just don't like talking about this kind of stuff," Alex told her with a shrug. "I know why I feel the way I do, and I know how to get through my feelings on my own. Violet gets that."

Mallory's brows furrowed, and she instantly knew what his words meant. She stared at him for a moment before she asked. "You haven't even been talking to Violet, have you?"

"Mal—"

"Seriously? Has it been this way since the very beginning?" Mallory questioned, and he didn't respond, which answered everything. "Come on. Are you serious? You never even talked to her? If you're not talking to her, you could at least talk to me."

"I am talking to you," Alex attempted to insist. "I talk to you every day."

"You know what I mean," Mallory narrowed her eyes in response. "You need to let me in, like I've been letting you in."
