𝐩𝐚𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 - 𝐭𝐚𝐲𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐬𝐰𝐢𝐟𝐭
Through the night, Mallory Shepherd and Alex Karev hardly got any sleep. They laid awake in their bed, still relishing in the fact that they were newly engaged. Though the happy moment was very quickly interrupted by a late-night call from Derek Shepherd.
Derek explained to Mallory in a rushed tone that Addison Montgomery had called him, telling him that she was rushing her brother, Archer Montgomery, straight to Seattle Grace. However, there were very few details to share. In less than five minutes, Mallory threw on the first pair of clothes that she could find, and she and Alex were out the door.
Every patient's story starts the same way...
It starts with them being fine. It starts in the before. They cling to this moment, this memory of being fine, this before.
In the ambulance bay, Mallory and Alex stood with Derek and Richard, waiting for the ambulance to arrive. When it did, Naomi Bennett and Addison were the first to get out, embracing everyone in hugs while the paramedics unloaded Archer.
As Mallory embraced Addison in a hug, she stressed to her. "We need to stop seeing each other with circumstances attached. We need happy visits from now on."
"Isn't that right?" Naomi added as she hugged Mallory next. "How's Seattle been? You hanging in there okay?"
"More than okay, Nai," Mallory nodded in response. "More than you would believe."
As though talking about it might somehow bring it back.
Richard stood beside the ambulance, giving Addison a reassuring smile as he insisted. "Don't worry. We're gonna take care of him."
The Shepherd man turned to Naomi, almost at a loss for words while he managed to say. "It's been a long time, Naomi."
"We've got an ICU bed all ready for him."
But what they don't realize is that the fact that they're talking about it to us, their doctors...
"Oh, yesterday, he was fine," Addison explained to everyone as they started to walk inside. "We went to lunch, and I thought he was fine."
"That's why you brought him here," Mallory reminded her. "Derek will get it all figured out."
Means there's no going back.
By the time they see us, they're already in the after.
Mallory joined the others in the trauma room, while Alex stood outside, trying his best to be there for his fiancée in any way that he could. She stood inside, holding Addison while Richard and Derek examined her brother, who had a parasite in his brain.
