It was early in the morning when Mallory Shepherd woke up to her phone ringing, over and over again. When she glanced over, she noticed Meredith Grey's name lighting up across the screen. But before she had a chance to grab it, her fiancé was already picking up the phone.

Alex Karev rubbed his eyes as he answered the phone and asked. "Why are you calling this early in the morning?"

Every surgeon I know has a shadow.

"I wasn't calling to talk to you," Meredith bluntly replied. "Put Mallory on the phone."

"Yes, Meredith?" Mallory spoke up with a chuckle. "You're on speaker by the way."

"You need to come and get your brother off the couch," Meredith pleaded with her, and Mallory could hear the uncertainty in her tone. "He's still sitting there—"

"Eating my entire box of cereal," Lexie concluded, taking Meredith's phone into her hands. "You need to come and help."

The couple shared a look before Mallory instantly agreed to come help, even though Alex looked hesitant for her to try. It didn't take them long to drive over to Meredith's, and when they arrived, it was much worse than she had led on.

Derek Shepherd was sprawled out on the couch, looking as if he hadn't taken a shower in ages. He had Lexie's cereal in one hand while he reached into the box with the other. Everyone shared a look of uncertainty. No one had realized exactly how hard the death of Jen Harmon hit him.

"Dude, he is fried off his ass," Alex stated with a raised brow. "I'm telling you."

"He's not fried," Meredith declared, narrowing her eyes as she made more excuses. "He lost a patient and got hit with a lawsuit all in one week."

"It still doesn't give him an excuse to smell like that," Mallory added while she crossed her arms against her chest. "How long has he been sitting there?"

"Three days."

A dark cloud of fear and doubt that follows even the best of us into the OR.

With a raised brow, Alex looked less than impressed by the sight, not even recognizing his fiancée's brother, who was typically well put together. "Three days? The sofa cushions are gonna start bonding to his ass or something."
